Contains spoilers and speculation
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'House of the Dragon' Season 2 Episode 7 aired on HBO on July 28, 2024. The entertaining episode featured a fascinating moment where Hugh (Kieran Bew) claims the large dragon Vermithor as a dragon seed.
Hugh is introduced in the show from the beginning of the second season as a man who suffers the consequences of war as his daughter dies due to the lack of resources in the King's Landing with the war going on.
In Episode 7, he talks about his mother being a Targaryen and the fans who have followed the show and 'Fire and Blood' were immediately speculating about who his mother could be.
Fans think Saera Targaryen is the mother of Hugh
Hugh claimed Vermithor in Episode 7 and the dragons as we have found out in the years of watching 'House of the Dragon' and 'Game of Thrones', can recognize the blood of the dragon. Fans seem to think they know the heritage of Hugh.
A Reddit user said, "May be geaking out here, but is he talking about Saera Targaryen?". Another added. "He definitely is talking about Saera" reacting to the scene where Hugh describes his mother to his wife.
Another Reddit user said, "I love the nod towards Saera The Original Hot Girl Dragon Queen Targaryen. I can only wish Hugh will talk more about her."
Another Reddit user speculated, "Definitely seems like Hugh is either talking about Saera, or maybe the idea is that Viserra Gael didn’t actually die, but went to work in a pleasure house instead and Jaehaerys covered it up? Regardless, I’m loving the expansion on Hugh, talking about the possibilities of Hugh's mother.”
A Reddit user said, "Hugh being Saera's son is a great little detail." Another Reddit user said, "The Old King’s ashes are rolling in their urn at the thought of Saera’s bastard claiming Vermithor" pointing to the fact that Jaehaerys was once ridden by Vermithor.
Who was Saera Targaryen?
In Episode 7, Hugh mentions that his mother called Hugh no different from her brother's sons Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) and Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith). He also mentions that his mother worked in a pleasure house.
In 'Fire and Blood', King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, is said to have a daughter called Saera Targaryen who was known for her rebellious nature and had affairs with many men in the Kingdom. She was attempting to claim a dragon when she was confined to a room and her lovers punished in one way or the other.
She escaped to work in a pleasure house in Lys and was known to have many illegitimate children. As per the accounts of the book, one of her children had an appearance similar to that of King Jaehaerys. From all accounts, Hugh's appearance appears similar to Jaehaerys
Saera never staked her claim to the throne and aid she had built her kingdom in Volantis after fleeing Lys as a wealthy but infamous woman. Jaehaerys despised her daughter and asked his wife Alysanne to not keep contact with Saera. Alysanne would try to keep in touch with Saera though but Saera wouldn't be too keen.
