When the 'Magnum P.I.' reboot first aired on CBS in 2018, fans were already talking about a crossover for the show with 'Hawaii Five-0'. Though this did not happen in the first season of 'Magnum P.I.', 2020 kicked off with an epic crossover event between the two shows this Friday.

When US national security is threatened by the theft of a classified document that contains the names of undercover CIA agents, Steve (Alex O’Loughlin) and his team enlist the help of Magnum, Higgins, Rick and TC (guest stars Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill) to retrieve it in the opener of a Hawaii-set crossover event that concluded on “Magnum P.I.”

Crossovers among procedurals have become a popular fare as NBC's 'Chicago' franchise's annual crossover events have proven. With the success of the first-ever crossover event between CBS's 'Hawaii Five-0' and 'Magnum P.I.', CBS could soon follow in NBC's footsteps in having its own annual crossover events.

Fans' reactions to the crossover certainly warrant it. One fan tweeted, "Great crossover event. Kudos to everyone involved. Loved the chemistry, the humor, the adventure. And, awww, the love. #H50xMagnum." Another wrote, "This was an awesome crossover between #H50 and #MagnumPI! Looking forward to the next crossover between the two shows! #H50xMagnum."

However, fans were disappointed that Danny (Scott Caan) was not featured as such in the crossover episodes, with one writing, "The crossover was fun. All the cast had great chemistry and energy. The plot was old but the emotion made up for it. Too bad schedules prevented it from being a full crossover w/o Danny or Steve in the 2nd half. But still enjoyable."

That said, future crossover events might address that as 'Magnum P.I.' hinted the possibility of them in a meta fashion during the final moments of its episodes. As Higgins asked Magnum whether they might cross paths with Five-0 again, Magnum replies, "It's a small island, you never know."
