Roy Halston Frowick was undoubtedly one of the most legendary fashion designers of this generation and inspired many budding designers during the 1970s and '80s. However, not a lot of people know about how he redefined American fashion with his bold designs. To help people know about Halston and his legacy, Netflix is coming out with a series titled Halston featuring Ewan McGregor in the lead role.

Based on the book, ‘Simply Halston’, by Steven Gaines, the series revolves around Halston (played by Ewan McGregor) and how he singlehandedly changed the landscape of American fashion. He worked hard and built a worldwide fashion empire that was synonymous with luxury, status, sex and fame. However, his life takes a U-turn and he finds himself fighting for control of his most precious asset – the name “Halston” itself.

The series has generated quite a lot of buzz in recent times and a lot of critics believe that it might be one of the first shows to be considered as a frontrunner at the upcoming Primetime Emmys. Here’s everything you need to know about the series.

Air time and how to live stream

The upcoming series will be airing live on Netflix at 3 am ET on Friday, May 14. Viewers can subscribe to Netflix directly, via a mobile app store (App Store, Google Play). You can also watch it by signing up for the platform’s free trial. Apart from that, viewers can also opt for different subscription plans provided by the streaming giant. A premium plan that allows more people to watch the service on different screens simultaneously, costs $18 per month. Meanwhile, the basic US plan costs $9 per month.

Plot

The official synopsis reads, “The limited series Halston follows the legendary fashion designer, played by Ewan McGregor, as he leverages his single, invented name into a worldwide fashion empire that’s synonymous with luxury, sex, status, and fame, literally defining the era he lives in, 1970s and ‘80s New York — until a hostile takeover forces him to battle for control of his most precious asset… the name Halston itself.”

Cast

Golden Globe-winning actor Ewan McGregor will portraying the character of Halston in the series while Rory Culkin and Rebecca Dayan will play Joel Schumacher and Elsa Peretti respectively. On the other hand, Krysta Rodriguez, Bill Pullman, Vera Farmiga and Gian Franco Rodriguez will be seen playing pivotal roles.

Creators 

‘Halston’ is penned by some of Hollywood’s most experienced writers like Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, Sharr White, Ted Malawer, Tim Pinckney, and Kristina Woo. Daniel Minahan, known for directing episodes for TV shows like ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘The Newsroom’, is donning the director’s hat for the series.

The series is executive-produced by Murphy, Brennan, McGregor, Minahan, White, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, and Christine Vachon, and Pamela Koffler of Killer Films.

Trailer

The trailer sees McGregor’s Halston saying how he has been an outsider all his life, but now he doesn’t give a “flying f**k” about it. As Halston narrates the trailer's opening, he can be seen gazing out the window of his Manhattan penthouse as models wearing his designs fade in and out of the frame. The clip also sees Halston crying in his bathroom when his life starts to go upside down.
