'Gaslit' Episode 7: Martha and John have final confrontation as bitter truth is revealed

The penultimate episode of ‘Gaslit’  deals with the aftermath of Martha’s decision to testify and how John finally decides to end their marriage

Starz drama ‘Gaslit’  has been successful in depicting the unknown stories of Watergate scandal and showcasing the different layers of how far certain people would go in order to push their narratives. The political thriller mainly revolves around Martha Mitchell (Julia Roberts) who was the main person to inform the public about president Nixon’s involvement in the Watergate scandal. Unfortunately this also cause her personal life and marriage to be at stake.

Throughout this time, Martha was accused by the Nixon government of being mentally unstable, an alcoholic, liar and attention seeker. Initially, she never questioned her husband's involvement in the watergate scandal and believed him to be a “fall guy” for Nixon. In the previous episode of ‘Gaslit’, Martha had decided to testify against her husband’s wishes. The penultimate episode of ‘Gaslit’  deals with the aftermath of Martha’s decision to testify and how John finally decides to end their marriage.

In episode 7 titled “ Year of the Rat”, John (Sean Penn) and Matha have an argument regarding Martha's decision to testify. John calls Martha a clown and delusional whereas Martha mocks John's loyalty towards Nixon and his greed for money and political ambition. Amid the fight, Martha finally learns the bitter truth that her husband John Mitchell was also involved in her kidnapping in California. He belittle her and calls her a "cheap joke" and an embarrassment to him. John also reveals to a shocked Martha that he is divorcing her and taking the custody of their daughter as well.

As John prepares to leave, Martha warns him that she will disclose all his evil deeds to the public including his involvement in the Watergate scandal . An enraged John has Martha in a chokehold and aggressively screams at her asking who is going to believe her. He mocks a horrified Martha and pushes her to the floor. This is witnessed by their daughter Marty and John asks her to go to her room.

Towards the end of the episode, an emotional Martha begs John not to leave her. She agrees with him and says that she has embarrassed and disappointed him. She says that she has learned her lesson and apologizes to him. Martha also promises John that she can do better and can go back to her old self. She begs him to stay with her. However John doesn’t listen to her and tells her that he will send someone to the house to pack Marty’s clothes and leaves the house. A disappointed Martha has an emotional breakdown and she falls to the floor.
