Anthony Morrow: Former NBA player arrested for alleged strangulation, kidnapping of ex-girlfriend

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA: Former NBA player Anthony Morrow was arrested for kidnapping and strangling a female. Morrow is charged with assault on a female, assault by strangulation, communicating threats and second degree kidnapping in Charlotte, according to Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office arrest records.

For the said crimes, Morrow was arrested and committed to jail on Friday, February 10, and released two days later on a $15,000 bond, according to a report by the Associated Press. The victim was apparently dating Morrow at the time of the assault.

'Victim was hurt, left with scratches on her neck'

According to Charlotte-based news channel, WSOC-TV, the former player allegedly strangled the woman by squeezing her neck with his hands and had been striking her multiple times with his fists at her uptown apartment in the Queen City. The victim was hurt, she was left with scratches on the right side of her neck, a cut lip, and abrasions on her forehead.

Allegations denied

The allegations were denied by Morrow's lawyers to the Charlotte outlet on Friday, March 3. His lawyer said, "He has faith in our justice system and has every confidence that a review of the evidence will reveal that he is not guilty."

Anthony Morrow is a native of Charlotte and he attended Charlotte Latin School before he went to Georgia Tech and later embarked on his NBA career. The 37-year-old was named North Carolina's 'Mr Basketball' in 2004 while playing at his high school. Morrow played nine seasons in the NBA after signing as an undrafted player with the Warriors following his collegiate career at Georgia Tech.

He spent time with the Warriors, Nets, Hawks, Mavericks, Pelicans, Thunder, Bulls, and Trail Blazers, though he never played a game with Portland once the team waived him during the 2017-18 preseason. He started a career-best 47 games with the Nets in 2010-11. Throughout his career, Morrow played 564 games, averaging 9.4 points per game, 2.2 rebounds, and a 44.7% (FG) and 41.7% (3PT) shooting rate.

Morrow returned home to Charlotte following the conclusion of his NBA career. Besides basketball, he was known to give back to the community, and he started the 501(c)3 organization Anthony Morrow Charities. The website for his organization noted its programs, in part, "focus on empowering and equipping our youth in the West Charlotte area to promote respect."
