High-speed chase across counties
The Marshall County Sheriff's Office reported that the BMW dangerously maneuvered past two trucks on the road's shoulder, narrowly avoiding a collision with one of them according to Waaytv.com
In response to this reckless behavior, a deputy activated his emergency equipment and initiated a pursuit of the speeding BMW, heading north on Highway 431 into Madison County.
The pursuit was marked by the BMW executing a U-turn in New Hope, re-entering Marshall County in the process. The Sheriff's Office noted that the pursuit reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour at various points.
As the chase unfolded, Guntersville Police attempted to halt the BMW's progress by deploying spike strips near the state highway department, but these measures proved unsuccessful. Guntersville Police soon joined the pursuit as it crossed the river bridge.
Collision at Highway 69 intersection
The dramatic chain of events took a turn when the BMW approached the intersection of Highway 69. Here, the driver made an ill-fated attempt to turn right and lost control of the vehicle, ultimately colliding with another vehicle that was in the process of turning onto Highway 431 S.
The collision brought the BMW to a halt, and the individual behind the wheel was promptly taken into custody. Due to his injuries, he was transported to Huntsville Hospital.
The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision was also taken to Marshall Medical North but was subsequently released.
The BMW's driver was identified as the 28-year-old Robert Lanning, hailing from Melbourne, Florida. Further investigation revealed that he was the subject of a felony probation violation warrant out of Georgia, related to a felony family domestic violence conviction.
Additionally, Lanning was wanted in both Georgia and Florida for failure to appear in court (FTA) in relation to DUI charges and several other traffic-related offenses.
Presently, Robert Lanning remains in custody, facing charges of felony attempt to elude, probation violation from Georgia, and numerous traffic offenses. He continues to be guarded in the hospital, with no bond set for his release.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities have indicated that additional charges may be forthcoming. The collaborative efforts of Guntersville Police, Guntersville Fire, and State Troopers contributed to the resolution of this incident.
