Florida man arrested for carjacking vehicle and leading officers on high-speed chase through multiple counties on August 31

SARASOTA, FLORIDA: On August 31, authorities including the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit and the Arcadia Police Department initiated the arrest of a Florida man named Barry Dean McBurney Jr on multiple charges including aggravated assault.

During the arrest attempt, McBurney managed to evade deputies on foot and proceeded to carjack a vehicle.

Florida man sends cops on high-speed chase 

Barry Dean McBurney Jr led authorities on a high-speed chase that at times reached speeds exceeding 100 mph, spanning across Arcadia, DeSoto, Manatee, and Hillsborough counties. 

The pursuit came to a conclusion when the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office successfully employed spike strips to immobilize the vehicle and blocked its path.



 

According to the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office’s Facebook post, “During the chase, McBurney even rammed into one of our deputy’s patrol vehicles, and attempted to hit another!"

The post continued, "But justice prevailed as the combined efforts of DCSO, APD, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, and Manatee County Sheriff's Office deputies and aviation unit worked together."

"After several attempts, the pursuit ended off I-75 exit 250 after deputies stopped the vehicle with spike strips, and DCSO blocked him in, leading to his apprehension,” it added.

McBurney is now facing his original charges along with additional charges of carjacking and aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer.

This is besides the charges of resisting an officer without violence, aggravated fleeing to elude, and driving while license suspended.
