Demetrius Haley accused of previously beating inmate, Internet says he 'should've never been hired'
MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE: Demetrius Haley, One of the five Memphis cops who has been alleged of killing Tyre Nichols beat up an ex-prisoner eight years back. Cordarlrius Sledge, 36, the one who got beaten up revealed his experience. He claimed that Haley, a correction officer, took part in the May 16, 2015 beatdown inside the Shelby County Division of Corrections.
According to New York Post, Sledge said, “I could be dead. As it is, my body still hurts from the beating. It’s gonna hurt for life." He further added, ”I had some contraband on me and I was trying to flush it down the toilet but they didn’t follow protocol. Haley was the most vicious."

Sledge was serving a period of three years in jail back then for aggravated assault, and filed the lawsuit on his own behalf. Meanwhile, the suit claims that Haley and another officer came forward and punched him in the face while searching for a cell phone. However, he also alleged that a third guard slammed him face-first into a sink.
What did Haley do to Sledge?
“There was so much blood on my pillow. It damaged my right ear for life,” he said. The victim also claimed that though he received an apology from the prison warden, he did not get any apology from Haley. Haley was appointed to the police department in August 2020. “He got a promotion, from corrections officer to police officer,” Sledge said. “I didn’t believe my damn eyes.” Meanwhile, the 30-year-old police officer denied in court papers that he assaulted Sledge. However, the lawsuit was dismissed after Sledge was unable to submit crucial information.
'Who hired him?'
The Internet quickly reacted to Haley's new update. A user said, "Should've never been hired as a cop. Do they not check this kind of stuff, or do they just hire anybody?."Another added, "Who hired him? Go straight to the top and give them the boot." A user added, "Hiring is where it all starts. Retention in the face of stuff like this is next." "And they hired him on as a cop? They didn’t fire him for beating up a prisoner? Dandy. The defund the police crowd has scared a lot of potentially good cops away so now we are stuck with whatever," claimed a user. A user wrote, "Wow surprise surprise. These guys should've been on probation a long time ago . I bet they never even had internal reviews." "Maybe he left that out of his resume," claimed a user. Another asked, "A wonderful example of someone with great self control, compassion, and self discipline."
