Delphi murders: Indiana prosecutors dismiss 'pagan cult' theory in the death of victims calling it 'dramatic'
CARROLL COUNTY, INDIANA: Prosecutors involved in the Delphi murders case have responded firmly to the controversial theory of the defendant Richard Allen's attorney's alleging that the teenage victims Liberty 'Libby' German, 14, and Abigail 'Abby' Williams, 13, were "ritualistically sacrificed."
The attorneys alleged the two young girls were targeted and sacrificed by members of Odinism, a "pagan cult."
However, the Indiana prosecutors called their notion "colorful, dramatic, and highly unprofessional," reported Law and Crime.
Richard Allen filed a motion to authorize public broadcasting of court proceedings
After Allen filed a motion to authorize public broadcasting of all pretrial and trial proceedings in the courtroom, the prosecution filed a six-page motion opposing his request, according to court documents.
Nicholas McLeland, a Carroll County Prosecutor told Special Judge Fran C Gull that the state has “serious concerns” regarding the defense team’s approach, which he described as "extrajudicial grandstanding" that could undermine the judicial process.
"Defense counsel continues to use inflammatory language in pleadings, including statements that are simply not true, and there is no reason to think they will not continue to use supercilious language in court, designed as soundbites for recording on the national stage, for example the language used by defense describing 'the conditions under which Mr Allen has been forced to endure are akin to that of a prisoner of war,'" read the motion.
Prosecutors call 'ritualistic' killing theory a 'fanciful defense for social media to devour'
In the recent defense filing, the prosecutors claimed that authorities involved in the investigation of the murder withheld exculpatory evidence and have lied under oath as they have ignored evidence suggesting that the teen victims may have been "ritualistically sacrificed" by a white nationalist cult called 'Odinism', a pagan Norse religion.
Prosecutors branded the defense team's assertions as sensationalistic and unfounded as they stated "90% of the memorandum outlines its fanciful defense for social media to devour."
What are the charges against Richard Allen?
In connection to the double killings of 14-year-old Libby and 13-year-old Abby in 2017, Allen has been charged with two counts of murder.
The victims were reported missing on February 13, 2017, while walking the Monon High Bridge Trail near Delphi, Indiana. Their bodies were found the next day in a wooded area near the Delphi Historic Trails system.
The deaths of both Libby and Abby were determined to be homicides, according to Law and Crime.
