HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA: A grand jury has indicted an ex-Alabama police officer in Huntsville who allegedly killed his pregnant girlfriend in January 2022 and informed emergency dispatchers that she shot herself to death, according to authorities. David McCoy is scheduled for his next court appearance on April 4.

In connection to the death of the unborn baby and the mother Courtney Spraggins, the former police officer was indicted on March 25 on three counts of capital murder. McCoy has been accused of shooting Spraggins in the head on January 7, 2022. The couple was inside a parked vehicle when the incident took place, reported People.

Spraggins was seven months pregnant with McCoy's baby

At the time of the alleged violence, McCoy was off-duty. Following the fatal shooting, he called 911 and claimed that his girlfriend committed suicide. Spraggins who was shot to death was seven months pregnant with McCoy's baby. Their relatives confirmed that they were in a relationship.

The former police officer tested positive for residue of a gunshot and investigators determined that the pistol found in connection to the death was not his service weapon. Police also found the deceased woman's phone locked in a closet in his home.

What was McCoy's motive behind the murder?

Before the responding officers arrived at the crime scene, the accused murderer changed his clothes and dialed the non-emergency line of the Hunstville Police Department to ask whether they had received any calls reporting a shooting.

After he was taken into custody following the shooting death, McCoy was placed on administrative leave from the department but he was "immediately relieved him of his role as police officer," said Chief Mark McMurray.

In this case, prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for him. The pregnant woman from Maryland moved to Huntsville to be with McCoy. However, when Spraggins arrived, he told her that he "needed more time." When asked about what to do, McCoy responded to her text message saying, "A bullet to the head sounds good to me."

While Spraggins was pregnant and moved to Huntsville, he was engaged and living with someone else, according to WAAY-TV. Brittney Hayes, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Special Agent testified that during an interview with McCoy for the investigation, he said, "I did it." Authorities have not yet disclosed McCoy's motive behind the murder.
