The police procedural show focuses on the fictional 21st District which houses patrol officers and the department's elite Intelligence Unit. After the second half of the fourth season, the show completely started focusing on the intelligence unit as Chicago PD tackled some of the most dangerous cases in the show’s history. Season 9 will be really important for fans because there are reports doing rounds that one of the main characters on the show might not return after that brutal ending in the previous season. So, here’s everything we know about the upcoming edition.
Release date and how to watch
‘Chicago PD’ Season 9 will be premiering exclusively on NBC on Wednesday, September 22. According to the network, the show will be taking its usual 10 pm EST slot once again for a new episode every week. Viewers can subscribe to NBC on various streaming services such as Hulu, Peacock, FuboTV, and YouTube TV.
Plot
The plot of the show is simple. The Chicago Police Department (Chicago PD) will have new cases and stakes might be higher this time around. The network has released the synopsis for the premiere episodes and it reads as, “When a P.D. informant is murdered, the team digs in to track down the perpetrator only to learn a shocking truth. Voight (Jason Beghe) and Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) strategize to help Burgess (Marina Squerciati).”
Spoilers
Season 8 ended on an intense note and that’s why there is a curiosity among fans for the upcoming edition. The finale of Season 8 saw Kim Burgess (Squerciati) getting brutally assaulted by her attacker. However, things escalated quickly when it turned out that her attacker was not alone and had a partner.
After a fight between the two accomplices, one of Burgess’ attackers shoots his partner. But he did not stop there and went on to shoot the police officer as well. He shot her twice in the stomach and she says, “No, I have a daughter.” Fortunately, she survived the attack and crawled out of the place. She broke into one of the cars and turned on the emergency lights.
Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) and Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), who was looking out for her, finally noticed the emergency lights and reached the car to rescue her. The season ended with no update about how Burgess was doing after the gruesome incident and that has made fans believe that she might not be a part of the team in Season 9.
Cast
All the original cast members will be returning for the latest edition, but most importantly, it is reported that Squerciati will be back on the show as well. Jason Beghe will be returning as Henry “Hank” Voight, chief of the Chicago PD, while Jesse Lee Soffer will be once again playing the role of Detective Jay Halstead.
Another actor to return for Season 9 is Patrick John Flueger, who will be portraying the character of Adam Ruzek. Marina Squerciati will be returning as Kim Burgess and Amy Morton will play Sergeant Trudy Platt. On the other hand, Tracy Spiridakos will be once again seen playing the character of Detective Hailey Upton.

The long-running series has been created by iconic producers Dick Wolf and Matt Olmstead. Meanwhile, it is developed by the duo of Derek Haas and Michael Brandt.
Terry Miller, Jamie Pachino, Jeremy Beim, Michele Greco, Maisha Closson, and Kim Rome will act as producers on the show. On the other hand, Wolf, Olmstead, Brandt, Haas, Miller, Danielle Gelber, Mark Tinker, Arthur W. Forney, Peter Jankowski, and Rick Eid will be serving as executive producers.
