'Bob Hearts Abishola': Release date, plot, cast, trailer and everything you need to know about Chuck Lorre's spin on immigrant life

The series is about a small business owner, Bob who winds up in the hospital after a heart attack and becomes smitten with his nurse, Abishola, a Nigerian-American immigrant.

TV staple Chuck Lorre is bringing a new kind of story about immigrants to television. Slated to come to CBS this fall, 'Bob Hearts Abishola' takes a look at a Nigerian immigrant family in America through their interactions with an American businessman, Bob who runs a compression-sock business. 

Release date

The show will premiere on CBS on September 23, 2019.

Plot

Bob is a 50-year old compression-sock businessman from Detroit in a competitive trade. He runs the business with his family that includes Dottie his protective mother who also depends on him to run the business; Christina, his high-strung sister, and Douglas, his unenthusiastic brother. When Bob has a heart attack and is treated at the hospital, he meets Abishola, a nurse who has immigrated to America from Nigeria. Abishola is a single mother who is trying to ensure a better life for her son, Dele. Abishola and her son live with her orthodox Nigerian relatives, Aunt Olu and Uncle Tunde.

Bob takes a liking to Abishola and sets out to win her heart. Abishola, who initially lacks interest, starts warming up to him. Through Bob and Abishola, we get to see a new side of immigrant life in America as Bob tries to woo her.

Cast

Billy Gardell

Billy Gardell is a stand-up comedian and actor who is best known for his role as a Chicago police officer Mike Biggs, in the sitcom 'Mike and Molly'. He has also acted in 'My Name is Earl' and 'Young Sheldon'. Gardell will play the title character, Bob.

Folake Olowofoyeku

Folake Olowofoyeku is an actress originally from Nigeria. She has previously acted in 'How To Get Away With Murder', '30 Rock' and 'Westworld'. She will play the role of Abishola, which will be her first leading role in American television.

Creator

The sitcom has been created by Chuck Lorre, Eddie Gorodetsky, Alan Higgins and Gina Yashere. Lorre is known for creating sitcoms like 'Two and a Half Men', 'The Big Bang Theory', 'Mom', and 'Young Sheldon'. Gorodetsky has written for 'Mom', 'Mike and Molly', and 'Saturday Night Live'. Higgins has previously worked on "Malcolm in the Middle' and 'Mike and Molly'. Yashere is a British comedian of Nigerian origin who has worked on 'The Daily Show with Trevor Noah' and 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno'.
