Netflix's 'Ares': Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about the Dutch horror series

Netflix's first Dutch original series will soon be arriving on the popular streaming service. 'Ares' is an eight-part psychological horror story that follows best friends Rosa (Jade Olieberg) and Jacob (Tobias Kersloot ) as they become involved with a secret student society in Amsterdam and slowly realize that they have entered a demonic world built on secrets from the country's past.

'Ares' will be coming to Netflix on January 17.

Plot

When Rosa and Jacob are recruited into the secret society known as Ares, they think they are on the road to money and power as part of Amsterdam's elite. However, things take a turn for the worse when they realize that Ares' power is built on infernal secrets from the Dutch Golden Age. Here's the official plot synopsis from Netflix: "The eight-episode psychological horror series enters the world of Ares, a secret student society in the heart of Amsterdam where best friends Rosa and Jacob surrender to a world of wealth and power. But slowly they start to realize they’ve entered a demonic place, built on secrets from The Netherlands’ past. A place where true power comes at a terrible price."

Olieberg, who plays the lead character, Rosa, in 'Ares', is an actress who is best known for 'Ik Weet Wie Je Bent' (2018), 'Hoe overleef ik...?' (2008) and 'Atlantis' (2008). She is joined on the cast by Robin Boissevain, Frieda Barnhard, Tobias Kersloot, Lisa Smit, Rifka Lodeizen, Roos Dickmann, Jip van den Dool, Steef de Bot, Janni Goslinga, Dennis Rudge, Minne Koole, Jennifer Welts, and Florence Vos Weeda.

Creator

Pieter Kuijpers

Kuijpers is the co-owner of production company Pupkin and the creator of 'Ares'. He is best known as the director of 'Van God los' (2011), 'Nothing to Lose' (2008), 'Manslaughter' (2012) and 'Love is the Word' (2013). 'Ares' was directed by Amsterdam based director Giancarlo Sanchez, who is best known for his award-winning movie 'Horizon', and Michiel ten Horn, who received international acclaim for his 2012 movie 'The Deflowering of Eva van End'.

With haunting visuals and some very creepy transitions, the trailer for 'Ares' is a total terror all on its own. The trailer gives us a sneak peek into the glamorous world of the titular secret society while also giving us just a taste of the horrors to come.  If the trailer is anything to go by, the show might just be a truly exhilarating experience for horror fans and we can't wait to see it.
