'Wheel of Time': Release date, plot, cast, and everything you need to know about Rosamund Pike's fantasy drama series

The series draws on different elements of European and Asian culture and philosophy, specifically Buddhism and Hinduism

After an awfully long wait, 'The Wheel of Time' fandom is closer than ever to getting their much-awaited series. Rosamund Pike has been cast as Moiraine in the Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television co-production. The series is based on the books written by Robert Jordan, which spanned 14 volumes and became the best-selling fantasy series since 'The Lord of the Rings'. 'The Wheel of Time' has sold over 90 million books worldwide and is set in a fantasy world where magic exists but can only be used by women. 

Release date

Details about the release date are not out as of yet. 

Plot

'The Wheel of Time' follows Moiraine (played by Pike), a member of the powerful, influential all-woman organization called the Aes Sedai. Moiraine goes on a dangerous journey across the world with five young men and women. She believes one of these five people might include the reincarnation of a person – the Dragon Reborn – who is prophesied to save or destroy humanity. The series draws on different elements of European and Asian culture and philosophy, specifically Buddhism and Hinduism.

Pike wowed audiences with her role in 'Gone Girl'. The role was met with critical acclaim and she won the Saturn Award for Best Actress and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. She is also known for her roles on 'Pride & Prejudice', 'Wrath of the Titans' and 'Jack Reacher'. 

For now, only Pike's casting has been revealed.

Creator

The series is based on the books by Robert Jordan. The Amazon production is adapted for television by executive producer and showrunner Rafe Judkins (of 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D' and 'Hemlock Grove').
