'Queen of ugly crying faces': Katy Perry trolled for sobbing on 'American Idol', Internet calls her outfit 'unflattering'

BRENTWOOD, CALIFORNIA: Fans of 'American Idol' have criticized Katy Perry's finale outfit, stating she seemed to be wearing a bikini. On the other hand, many people did not enjoy her 'ugly' sobbing face on television either.

'American Idol's Top 3' — Iam Tongi, Megan Danielle, and Colin Stough — took the stage for the final time on Sunday night as America chose the winner of the competition. The mentor for the Top 3 artists was Keith Urban, a judge from Seasons 12 to 15. He also sang 'Wild Hearts', his top-charting single from 2022, on the Idol stage. But Katy's antics were what really got the show going.

'What's with the plastic chest insert?'

Katy upped the ante with a seductive costume, but many weren't impressed. The pop diva, who was joined on stage by Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, wore a crimson dress with cutout accents and a transparent skirt. The top of the dress crossed her collarbone, with a cutaway beneath and another below her chest. The bottom half of the dress had an underwear-style red fabric and a lengthy see-through skirt with sparkling rhinestones all over it. She accessorized the look with a sultry pair of high-heeled boots. Katy's hair was down in huge, bouncy curls.

Speaking of her outfit, one asked, "What’s with American Idol Katy Perry’s see through dress tonight?" Another chimed in, "That dress is not flattering on Katy Perry!" One fan tweeted, "Katy Perry Put some clothes on. Last time I checked American Idol is a family show." One person asked, "What's with the plastic chest insert?"

'I had to grab a little tissue'

Katy also burst into tears during the 'American Idol' finale, raving over winner Iam's performance. The Hawaiian singer grabbed the stage and sang a poignant performance of Keith's song 'Making Memories of Us'.

Before approaching the 'American Idol' stage, Iam met with Keith to discuss his song selection and to get some suggestions for his performance. Early in their conversation, he confessed that his late father used to play one of the Australian country singer's songs in their house when he was a boy. Keith stated that he had an "emotional connection" to the song, implying that it was the correct decision for him.

Iam onto the stage with his guitar strapped to his back and his feet in flip-flops. He delivered a typically touching performance that moved some of the judges to tears.

Katy was seen weeping in her seat, but Lionel and Luke kept their emotions more hidden. After Iam finished singing, Katy began the judgment by saying, "Can I just say one thing? In between you and Megan, I had to grab a little tissue and fold it into a triangle because every time you come on, and you sing the vibration that comes out of your mouth, it goes through the weeds of people’s hearts, and it just gets to them. It moves us so much," she said. "So when you sing, I am ready to feel, baby."

Luke and Lionel both admitted to being in or near tears throughout the performance in their judges' remarks. Katy and Luke both burst into tears when he ascended the stage for the second time on Sunday.

Reacting to Katy crying to Iam's performance, one viewer tweeted, "I swear Katy Perry may be taking over Kim kardashian as queen of ugly crying faces." While another person quipped, "katy needs to become actor fulltime."

'American Idol' will return with a new season between January and March of 2024 during the broadcast television midseason schedule.
