PUBLISHED JUL 30, 2019

Robin Thede has a new show coming to HBO and it's every bit as hilarious as one would expect an all-black-women sketch comedy show to be. Titled 'A Black Lady Sketch Show', the series has already made history with its all exclusive stellar cast that includes the likes of 'Insecure' actress Issa Rae and it also brags of the first all-black women writers room. This soon-to-be-arriving series goes a good way to remind us how foreshadowed the concept of an all-black female comedy series has been, and how it was about time TV networks started taking a chance on it. Here's all you need to know about it.

Release date:

Thede's 'A Black Lady Sketch Show' premieres on Friday, August 2, only on HBO.

Plot:

According to the official synopsis, "the show will include comedy sketches performed by a regular cast of Black female comedians as well as some celebrity guests." Thede has also shared the different arenas the themes of the comedy will explore, including certain culturally relevant themes like anxiety, religion, societal norms, relationship, dating, and sex. HBO describes the show as "a narrative series set in a limitless magical reality full of dynamic, hilarious characters and celebrity guests. The show presents sketches performed by a core cast of black women."

Creator:

The show comes from Robin Thede, who is a comedic actress, writer, sketch and improvisational comedian. Thede was the first African-American woman to serve as a head writer or a late-night TV show and has also dabbled as an entertainment correspondent, host, and radio personality.

Cast

Alongside Robin Thede, the show will also feature some stellar women in comedy, such as 'Insecure's Rae, and BuzzFeed's beloved Quinta Brunson. Ashley Nicole Black and Gabrielle Dennis are also going to keep us hooked with their exceptional skills. It was also reported that other familiar big names expected to feature on the show include Kelly Rowland, Tia Mowry, Aja Naomi King, Angela Bassett, Patti LaBelle, Amber Riley, Yvonne Orji, Loretta Devine, Gina Torres, David Alan Grier, Jermaine Fowler, Lil Rel Howery, Deon Cole, Khandi Alexander, Marsai Martin, Laverne Cox, Yvette Nicole Brown, Larry Wilmore and Lena Waithe.

Trailer

The first official trailer for season one of 'A Blady lady Sketch Show' arrived earlier in July, and you need to watch it to realize just how hilarious the adventure of exploring Thede and her on-screen friends' lives are going to be like. Check it out here:
