Zoë Kravitz says Hulu lacks diversity after 'High Fidelity' gets axed, viewers agree but call show 'mediocre'

In ‘High Fidelity’, Kravitz starred as Rob, a pop culture-obsessed owner of a record store. The gender-bending, modern reimagining of the 2000 film of the same name starring John Cusack was canceled after season 1

In the wake of Hulu canceling the series ‘High Fidelity’ after airing only one season, the show’s actor Zoë Kravitz called out the streaming service for not having shows with much diversity. Kravitz took to her Instagram on Thursday, August 6, to post behind-the-scenes photos with other ‘High Fidelity’ cast members after the cancellation. “I wanna give a shout out to my #highfidelity family. Thank you for all the love and heart you put into this show. I’m in awe of all of you. And thank you to everyone who watched, loved, and supported us. #breakupssuck,” she wrote.

Actors like Tessa Thompson, Reese Witherspoon, Halle Berry, and others, commented on the photos, offering their support and condolences.“NO! I rarely find shows that genuinely impress me. This one did. I told you how much I loved this show. And I still do. This one definitely deserved another season,” Lena Waithe said in the comments. “WHAT!? Why do I always find out about tragic s**t this way?!” Questlove said.

When Thompson wrote, “I will miss you all so much,” Kravitz replied to her, “It’s cool. At least Hulu has a ton of other shows starring women of color we can watch. Oh wait.”

But Kravitz’s comment may not have received the reaction expected. While there were many mourning the cancellation of the gender-bending, modern reimagining of the 2000 film of the same name starring John Cusack, there were those who simply did not think the cancellation meant much. “Oh, now she’s a minority as she has skin in the game if her show is not canceled which she has said anything about diversity! I really doubt it! (sic),” wrote a Twitter user following the news about her comment.

Another wrote, “Nothing to do with the fact she’s an underwhelming actress born into luck.” While one Twitter user said, “Ah, who else remembers the days when s*** got canceled because it wasn't good and nobody watched it and that was that.”

While many agreed that Hulu did indeed need more diversity in its shows and films, they also questioned if ‘High Fidelity’ was good enough to continue past season 1. “Does Hulu need more diversity? Yes. However, that doesn’t excuse the fact that HF was a mediocre show that didn’t merit a renewal,” wrote a Twitter user. Another said, “Funny thing. They don’t cancel it if they make money. Therefore I would say it didn’t have many viewers. Let's not pay attention to the fact that she isn’t a great actor.”

Another Twitter user wrote, ‘This show was terrible but she definitely has a point”. “Zoe Kravitz has benefited greatly from having famous parents. She would never have been given the opportunities she has as she's not a good actress and even good ones don't get breaks like she has. Her statement shows how clueless she is to her privilege,” pointed out a Twitter user.

In ‘High Fidelity’, Kravitz starred as Rob, a pop culture-obsessed owner of a record store. Other cast members included Jake Lacy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and David H. Holmes. Hulu is yet to respond to this allegation.
