Alphabet Inc’s YouTube said on Tuesday, January 12, it has suspended President Donald Trump’s channel as it violated policies by inciting violence and leading to Jan 6 assault on the US Capitol by Trump supporters. In a video posted by Trump's channel on YouTube on Jan 12 the president said that impeaching him for inciting violence at the Capitol would be "very dangerous for the USA." YouTube removed the video.

"After review, and in light of concerns about the ongoing potential for violence, we removed new content uploaded to Donald J. Trump’s channel for violating our policies. It now has its 1st strike & is temporarily prevented from uploading new content for a *minimum* of 7 days," YouTube's Twitter handle posted citing a reason for the removal. It further added: "2/ Given the ongoing concerns about violence, we will also be indefinitely disabling comments on President Trump’s channel, as we’ve done to other channels where there are safety concerns found in the comments section."

YouTube did not clarify what video violated its policies. The suspension is the latest by one of the nation's leading social media platforms who have removed nearly all access to the president's online platforms that allowed him to directly reach Americans. After several warnings and a 12-hour ban on January 6, 2021, social media platform, Twitter finally blocked and deleted President Donald Trump's account. The suspension news on January 8, 2021, came as a huge shock and led to much controversy on the micro-blogging platform.

"A minimum of seven days is an important and necessary first step by YouTube, and we hope they will make it permanent," Jim Steyer, CEO and founder of Common Sense Media, said in a statement to USA TODAY.

As soon as the news came to light, people started talking about it. As CNN Reporter Brian Fung tweeted, "YouTube tells me that Trump’s channel earned a first strike for the video, and under YouTube’s policies, a first strike violation involves a one-week timeout where uploads and streaming are restricted." He further wrote, "I asked YouTube to say which video it found problematic. YouTube declined, but said that the one-week suspension is a minimum, not a maximum, and that it would revisit the decision at the end of the one-week period."

Another one suspected, "I feel like something is building here. I think that he is more dangerous now more than ever. He is losing everything. And has nothing to lose." One wrote: "ANOTHER DOOR CLOSED IN DONALD TRUMP'S FACE YouTube ban: Google blocks new uploads to Donald Trump's channel after Capitol riots, citing potential for violence."

While many Internet users demanded the video channel to make the ban "permanent", as one said, "Okay @YouTube not bad. Please make it permanent. Trump will not change. He’s a monster that will only get worse." Another one wrote, "Hopefully, YouTube will extend a permanent ban against Trump. Trump incited insurrection and sedition for months. His enablers did, too. Their YouTube channels need to be shut down, too."

Soon, more and more people started putting forward a similar demand, "Next to join in the silencing party: #YouTube. Trump suspended for 7 days – who's going to be shocked if that's permanent? #BigTech #BigTechCensorship," said one Internet user. Another one said: "A minimum 7 day suspension is an important & necessary first step by YouTube. We hope they will make it permanent. It is disappointing that it took a Trump-incited attack to get here, but appears that the major platforms are finally beginning to step up."

Another one requested, "7 days? Seriously, @SusanWojcicki? Make the Trump ban permanent. His videos are even more destructive than his tweets. @youtube
#trump #bantrump #twitterban #impeachtrumpnow #25thAmmendment." Another one said: "After 7 days, Trump will be a twice impeached PRIVATE PERSON who is facing prison time. YouTube will permanently ban him then."
