'My Lady Jane' begins by clearly stating it's a fun twist on history, focusing on Lady Jane Grey (Emily Bader). The series starts with a quick overview of real history but then tosses it aside to tell its own tale.

It kicks off as Jane prepares to marry Lord Guildford Dudley (Edward Bluemel), a match arranged by her mother Lady Frances Grey (Anna Chancellor), and Guildford's father Lord Dudley (Rob Brydon).

Stuck in this arranged marriage, which they handle surprisingly well, Jane and Guildford navigate their new life together.

Things get complicated when Jane is named heir to England's throne by her cousin Edward VI (Jordan Peters), much to the annoyance of his sister Princess Mary (Kate O'Flynn) and her advisor Lord Seymour (Dominic Cooper).

Jane also faces the tensions of this alternate world—between Ethians, who can shapeshift into animals, and Veritys, who cannot.

The official plot synopsis reads, "History's most tragic heroines but reimagines it with an uplifting twist: the damsel in distress saves herself - and then the kingdom."
