'Doctor Who': Why is Jodie Whittaker quitting after three seasons? Miffed fans call out misogyny behind cameras

Many fans out there think that the topic boils down to gender discrimination and compared her to the previous actor who played the role, David Tennant

Ever since the news broke out that Jodie Whittaker is going to leave BBC's hit popular series 'Doctor Who', the Internet has found itself grieving the loss of yet another beloved Doctor. It is now being reported that Whittaker is quitting as 'Doctor Who' at the end of the next series.

According to reports, the 38-year-old actress told her bosses on the show that she doesn't plan to return for a new season and they will need to recast the role of the Time Lord.

A source revealed to The Daily Mirror that "it’s all very hush-hush but it is known on set that Jodie is leaving and they are gearing up for a regeneration." The insider continued, "Her departure is top secret but at some point, over the coming months the arrival of the 14th Doctor will need to be filmed. It’s very exciting."

That as it may be, the BBC is yet to officially confirm or deny these reports. They responded somewhere, "We won't be commenting on any speculation around Jodie's future on the show."

In July 2017, Jodie made history when it was announced that she was the Thirteenth (and first-ever female) Doctor. She had taken over the role from Peter Capaldi, who played the character from 2014-2017. News of her exit comes as quite a shock for fans because just a year ago in January 2020, she told Entertainment Weekly, "I absolutely adore [the role]. At some point, these shoes are going to be handed on, but it’s not yet. I’m clinging on tight!"

So it remains unclear if she is leaving. Fans are calling her a downright liar for apparently playing with their feelings. "JODIE IS LEAVING?! She said she wasn’t! LIES  #DoctorWho #jodiewhittaker" one tweeted. "Why are people believing Jodie Whittaker when she said she hasn't thought about leaving soon? She's an actress and every time this happens the actor says the same thing. They lie," another added.

Many fans out there think that the topic boils down to gender discrimination and compared her to the previous actor who played the role, David Tennant. "so David Tennant who voiced the highway f**king rat is a serious actor but Jodie who was always playing bereaved/traumatized characters before she got dw isn't?? the f**king stench of misogyny off that sentient boil I'm raging," one said.

However, a group of fans also pointed out to the obvious: "How is Jodie leaving Doctor after three seasons surprising anyone? Literally, every doctor since David Tennant has done three seasons, and yet 'critics' 'fans' claim she quit or was fired. The fandom menace strikes again! Just keep ignoring facts and twisting words. #DoctorWho."
