Why did Robin Roberts break down on ‘GMA’? Morning show host surprised with 'sentimental' gift for her on-air bachelorette
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: ‘Good Morning America’ recently became the headlining act for host Robin Roberts’ wedding to long-time partner Amber Laign after the show threw a massive on-air bachelorette party for the brides-to-be.
An entire episode was set apart to celebrate the union of Amber and Robin who have nearly been together for two decades.
‘GMA’ had co-hosts Michael Strahan, Lara Spencer, George Stephanopoulos, and Ginger Zee all playing their roles effectively to celebrate the bachelorette but it was a small unlikely surprise that brought tears to Robin’s eyes, as per The US Sun.
It happened during the ‘Deals & Steals’ segment when Lara and Tory Johnson were showing different products to the couple and Robin’s sister entered with a small gift piece that clearly made Robin teary-eyed.
Why did Robin Roberts break down on ‘GMA’?
The bachelorette celebration was in full swing with the couple treated to mocktails, games, visiting friends, and gifts.
However, there was one moment that did tug the heartstrings of Amber and especially Robin.
Robin’s sister, Sally-Ann, walked out on set to surprise the ‘GMA’ host with a personalized cutting board during the ‘Deals & Steals’ segment.
The board had both Robin’s and Amber’s names etched in the wood. It also featured a beloved recipe by the former’s late mother, Lucimarian, who died in 2012.
Tory Johnson who was hosting the segment with Lara Spencer told Robin, “These are great because you can put your name or a date on them. They also make one that's really, really special that your sister Dorothy helped me with.”
She continued, “Sally-Ann is here to show you this one — a very special board. They will allow you to submit something in writing and Dorothy helped with that.”
Robin was surprised on witnessing her sister and choked up at her sight. She held her tears as she admired the personalized board with her and Amber’s names.
Sally-Ann explained, "You know how much Mama is blowing kisses to you right now, and now you have her recipe for rosemary chicken. I know you're going to be in the kitchen, where you always are."
‘GMA’ Lara Spencer had hidden tissues for Robin Roberts to wipe her tears
After hearing her sister, Sally-Ann explains the reason behind the gift, Robin couldn’t contain her tears. She wiped them off and called the wooden piece “beautiful.”
Lara Spencer pointed out a box of tissues in front of her on the table, and Robin said she “should’ve known” something emotional was on the way after spotting the tissues earlier.
Her co-star admitted the crew “hid tissues” specifically because they figured Robin might need them during the segment.
Robin revealed that she will be marrying Amber earlier this year on air in a surprise announcement. The duo had kept their romance under the radar for nearly eight years before coming out to everyone.
