Emmy Nominations 2022: Drama category splits internet as adult hits go up against young favorites

Fans cheesed off as Emmys fail to recognize young actors for this year's nominees

The Emmy Drama category divides the internet as adult hits compete against youthful favorites. When the Emmy nominations for 2022 were announced, young fans were shocked by the omissions of their favorite series and performers. The nominations for the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards were revealed on Tuesday, and as usual, fans are ecstatic.

Fans congratulated all of the shows and actors whose names were read out by Melissa Fumero and J. B. Smoove during the live announcement, but what about those who didn't? This is the only list that is certain to be even more contentious than the nominees themselves. While they don't want to take away from others who garnered well-deserved nominations, fans felt it would be irresponsible if they didn't take a moment to recognize individuals they believe were neglected in the young favorite category.

On Tuesday morning, the nominees for the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, which recognize the finest in television, were released. 'Only Murders In The Building,' 'Ted Lasso,' 'Hacks,' 'Pam & Tommy,' and 'Succession' performed well, although numerous prominent names were omitted. Selena Gomez was not nominated for her main performance in 'Only Murders In The Building' as Mable Mora. However, she was recognized as a producer when the Hulu series landed the Outstanding Comedy Series category. Nevertheless, her co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin were honored for their performances.

Even though Gomez is just the second Latina to be nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series as a producer, many believe she was passed up for her part as Mable Mora on the show, even though she was one of the series' leads alongside Short and Martin. Pointing out the fact, a fan wrote: "steve and martin got emmy nominated as best lead actors in comedy but not selena FOR THE SAME SHOW??? #onlymurders."

Another fan wrote: "It does not seem fair to me when literally everyone from Only Murders in the Building is nominated for an Emmy but not Selena Gomez when she is incredibly good in the show."

With the announcement of season 2, fans are hopeful that Gomez would land a nomination next year: "Selena already eating up season 2 of OMITB… that Emmy will be hers next year."

It only needed a Kate Bush song and the reading of a letter for the world to recognize Sadie Sink, who portrays Max Mayfield in the fourth season of Netflix's 'Stranger Things.' Her remarkable performance on the hit fantasy program this season has caught the national zeitgeist. The 20-year-old phenom had the most important journey of any character in the most recent season, and fans were pulling for her to receive her first Emmy nod this year. However, they were deeply upset when she was not recognized for her outstanding performance at the Emmys.

While there is always the potential of vote splitting between actors, there is no disputing Sink's buzz on social media and throughout the field this season. Fans on social media are outraged by the Emmy snub for the young actor. They question why the Emmys are reluctant to nominate for young actors. One fan tweeted: "My main question is WHY are The Emmys so reluctant to nominate young actors? So much of the young characters in Yellowjackets have delivered fantastic performances and Sadie Sink was insane in Stranger Things as well. They usually will just go with 2-3 standouts, it's frustrating."

Another fan tweeted: "no emmys for sadie or millie????!!! are we okay?."

The 74th Emmy Awards will air on NBC and stream on Peacock on September 12. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will air on September 10 on FXX.
