Who is Sean Foley? ‘Survivor’ pays touching tribute to Emmy-nominated editor in penultimate episode
Following the high-stakes elimination of Steven Ramm, the penultimate episode of 'Survivor' Season 49 paid a heartfelt homage to editor Sean Foley. For the unversed, the Emmy-nominated editor served as supervising editor for eight seasons of 'Survivor', making him an integral part of the celebrity reality competition. Towards the end of the episode, the show flashed, "In loving memory of Sean Foley, our friend and colleague," making many wonder what really happened to Foley and how deeply he was connected to 'Survivor'.
Foley was the supervising editor for the first eight seasons of Survivor and played a key role in creating the show’s main title design, continuing to edit the title sequence through season 31 even after leaving his full-time role. His work on the show earned him five Emmy nominations, plus a sixth for 'The Contender', as per Entertainment Weekly. Across a 25-year entertainment career, Foley held roles ranging from visual effects artist to producer and showrunner, contributing to major networks and platforms.
He worked heavily on the 'Naked and Afraid' franchise as an executive producer and also lent his talents to series like 'The Apprentice', 'Undercover Boss', and 'Shark Tank'. Foley joined the 'Naked and Afraid' franchise as the executive producer and showrunner for 'Naked and Afraid XL', eventually expanding his role to work on the main series and spinoffs like 'Last One Standing' and 'Apocalypse' through 2025. Foley passed away in November, this year.
XL contestant Kyle Hennington honored Foley in a Facebook post, saying, "The Naked and Afraid community has lost a great man. Foley was one of the pioneers from the start of the show and helped engineer the XL spinoffs into the phenomenon they became. He touched so many lives and was the kindest human." Hennington further added that although they never met in person, he was "always so polite and cheerful and listened to what I had to say," adding, "He will be greatly missed. Rest easy, my friend."
As per reports, Foley's exact date of death wasn't officially announced, but a Sunday, November 30 Facebook tribute from 'Naked and Afraid' executive producer David Story suggests he likely died on Saturday, November 29 or November 30, as reported by Parade. Story's post suggests Foley died following a battle with brain cancer. Former 'Naked and Afraid' contestant Mandy Horvath also shared that they stayed in touch during his final months, describing how his condition worsened rapidly as he underwent two craniotomies, lost his ability to drive and work, and often confided in her about feeling like a burden to his family.
