A student at Rice University is now facing felony rioting and misdemeanor graffiti charges. Clara Kraebber was one of the eight people arrested for who allegedly causing $100,000 damage in the Flatiron District, New York City, New York, on Friday, September 4. If found guilty, the 20-year-old would face a four-year prison sentence.

For the last few days, New Yorkers have come out in the streets to protest the death of Daniel Prude, who died after being detained by police. According to reports, the 41-year-old, who had mental health issues, died after cops in Rochester put him in a "spit hood", which is made to protect officers from the saliva of the detainees. Though Prude died in March, his death has been reported only recently.

Clara was one among eight demonstrators who were arrested Friday night after a roiling, three-hour rampage. The slogan of the group was, “Every city, every town, burn the precinct to the ground!” as they continued their reportedly violent protest that saw busting of the plate glass facades of banks, Starbucks and Duane Reade. Reports stated that the protest was organized by groups identified as the “New Afrikan Black Panther Party” and the “Revolutionary Abolitionist Movement.”

Clara has gone viral since last week’s demonstration. The reported reason behind it is her privileged background. She has also been slammed for hypocrisy after it was found that she belongs to a very rich family and participated in damaging city businesses amid a global health crisis, The Sun reported. “No — not right now — I don’t want to talk about it,” Clara told The New York Post of her arrest. While one law enforcement source who was at the protest said: “This is the height of hypocrisy. This girl should be the poster child for white privilege, growing up on the Upper East Side and another home in Connecticut. I wonder how her rich parents feel about their daughter. How would they feel if they graffitied their townhouse?”

Who is Clara Kraebber?

Clara is an undergraduate student at Rice University in Texas. The university website has listed her as a University Court Representative. Her picture is also on the Twitter page of Rice University Young Democrats - a university society of which more than 100 are members. The group’s work and mission as per its website states: “We welcome all students who are interested in the Democratic Party; no matter your ideology, you’re welcome to join us at our meetings! Our club’s mission is simple: serve as a branch of the Democratic Party’s infrastructure on our campus. We do this in a variety of ways. Specifically, the Rice Young Democrats frequently registers voters, raises awareness about upcoming elections, connects students with quality internships at non-profits and campaigns, promotes progressive activism on campus, and coordinates with local campaigns to “get out the vote”.”

Regarding her personal details, The Post has reported that Clara’s mother, Virginia Kindred, is the founder of an architectural company, Kindred Arch.Works. The work of the company, which has been in business since 2016, “ranges in scale from detailed private homes to large scale mixed-use projects,” according to its website.

The young woman’s father, Markus Kraebber, is an Upper East Side child and adolescent psychiatrist. He also teaches at the Columbia University Department of Psychiatry. The family owns a $1.8 million apartment on East End Avenue. They also have a home in Litchfield County, Connecticut.

However, it has also been said that Clara has participated in street protests for years before allegedly becoming part of the violent demonstration on Friday. In 2014, when she was just 14 and a student at the elite Hunter College HS, she took part in a Manhattan rally on behalf of Ferguson, Missouri, police-shooting casualty Michael Brown. At the time, she told The New York Times: “We don’t have much political power right now, being youths, but this is something we can do.”
