Alabama’s Republican Secretary of State John Merrill has found himself in the middle of a storm over a sex scandal and ended a 2022 Senate bid after admitting that he had an affair with a legal assistant, who revealed racy messages and a recording of a phone call detailing their talks. Merrill, a former Democrat, has been serving as the secretary of state since 2015 and is a father of two. The 57-year-old had initially refuted the allegations saying they were part of a conspiracy to hurt his Senate bid.
Merrill said in a radio interview on April 6 that the accusations were being made to harm him and his family. A day later, AL.com cited Merrill telling it that he indeed had “an inappropriate relationship” with a 44-year-old woman and that he was disappointed in himself. He subsequently dropped his bid.

It was the woman, Cesaire McPherson from Montgomery, who made Merrill make a U-turn and confess by producing the proof. After Merrill first denied having an affair with McPherson and accused her of “stalking” and “harassing” him, the latter did not react on record but took to producing a recording and a short statement. “I don’t want to say anything other than here’s the proof that John Merrill is a liar,” she said. “Here’s the true John Merrill.”
The recording McPherson gave to AL.com details a conversation that she had with Merrill last October. In the 17-minute recording, the two spoke about various sexual acts they performed during their several romantic encounters that, according to McPherson, happened between November 2017 and November 2020. During their talks, Merrill seemed to try to end their relationship but McPherson was reluctant. The secretary of state told her that they had met for the final time and he was 'seeking help from the Almighty' to stay away. When Merrill was made to confront a part of the recording on Wednesday, April 7, he confessed and said there was no excuse for his extramarital affair.
“I am not able to stay away from you, so that’s the reason why I have to have help in order to do that … the help is coming from the Lord,” Merrill said. To which, McPherson allegedly asked: “So, the last time that we had sex, that’s the last time ever?” Merrill, a former Alabama House representative, is reported to have replied: “It’s supposed to be the last time ever. It should be the last time ever.”
Merrill accused of being 'real bad racist'
McPherson first came up with her allegations on April 6 when she gave right-wing blog National File the dirty texts that she said the politician gave her. She also accused him of being a “real bad racist” who made objectionable remarks about African-Americans in her presence. The Alabama Democratic Party even issued a statement over the racial allegations against Merrill saying: “The Democratic Party is much more concerned about the allegation that he regularly referred to African American judges and citizens in Alabama as ‘The Coloreds’. If true, he must apologize AND resign immediately.” Merrill though has denied the charges.
Coming back to their sexual encounters, McPherson told the File that Merrill allegedly enjoyed having his anus breached with sex toys and used his government vehicle to pay her visits and his official phone to send text messages. She claimed she recorded her sexual act with Merrill once and also accused the latter of physically hitting and injuring her. McPherson also alleged that Merrill liked to watch pornography movies and ordered them at home.

She also said that the secretary of state gave her a book named ‘Sex’ which he read as a manual to make love with her better. She also gave an image of that book. Also, a picture that Merrill had posted on his Facebook page in November 2018 showing him with McPherson and another woman at the Alabama State Capitol has come to the fore amid the scandal.
McPherson gives raunchy details about sexual encounters with Merrill
During her talks with the File, McPherson gave more raunchy details about her encounters with Merrill. She said she met the politician at a luxury five-star hotel in downtown Montgomery and it was in July 2019 when they started their sexual relationship. They had sex at both their residences and at the Gadsden Inn, McPherson said. She also alleged that Merrill would disparage his own wife Cindy to her. The two even had sex in Merrill’s marital bed.
“I started it, sending messages…For some reason I just got bored one night and I was sending the text messages and I said maybe we should go have lunch or something. And he said, or something? And I was like, okay. So, it was from like November until January, we’d just send text messages back. Then in January we started to just like over Facebook video just showing each other our body and doing things, and then when he met me for the second time in person and realized that I really am, I’m a very sexy kind of person, and I can’t help it. I just am,” McPherson was quoted as saying by the File. “It was July 2019, and then we’d just, he’d come over Sunday night, Monday night, sometimes Tuesday nights if she (his wife) didn’t come into town and stay in the apartment with him because he would have to be there with her. And mostly Wednesday and Thursday. Sunday, Monday, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and then if he had a weekend…I stayed at his house twice. I went and spent the night, and then I slept in her bed and had sex in her bed.”
