State Judge Arthur Engoron has ordered President Donald Trump’s second son Eric Trump to comply with a subpoena to testify in the New York investigation surrounding his family business no later than Wednesday, October 7, according to reports. New York Attorney General Letitia James enforced Eric’s subpoena at the court to ensure he testifies before the November elections. The judge ruled that the court is not “bound by the timelines of the national election”, and reportedly rejected the claims of Eric’s lawyers that his “extreme travel schedule” for his father’s re-election campaign called for a delay.

Where is Eric Trump now? A look at the controversy surrounding Trump Organization

In 2017, Forbes reported that the Eric Trump Foundation was allegedly using the money intended to go to cancer patients for family businesses. It further claimed that over $1.2 million of donations from Eric’s charity was moved to the Trump Organization for the use of Trump’s Westchester golf course. It was also reported that more than $500,000 of the money donated towards the treatment of cancer patients was “re-donated to other charities, many of which were connected to Trump family members or interests, including at least four groups that subsequently paid to hold golf tournaments at Trump courses”. While Eric’s foundation claimed that the money raised from golf charity was directed to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, public tax records allegedly showed that the foundation used the majority of the fund to cover costs of the events pertaining to the Trump Organization. Following Forbes’ reports, an investigation into the workings of the Trump Organization and Eric’s involvement was confirmed by James.

According to Eric’s lawyers, he’s currently busy with the campaigns for Trump's re-election. They further stated that he could attend court only after the elections “to avoid the use of his deposition attendance for political purposes”. Eric’s lawyer, Alan Futerfas, told in a statement that they were “happy for him to sit down and be deposed”, but needed time to review the thousands of pages of documents sought by James’ office. Futerfas said, “As the world knows, there’s an election going on in about four weeks in this country, maybe five weeks. Eric Trump is a vital and integral part of that, and he’s traveling just about seven days a week.” James’s office said that the investigators are yet to confirm if any laws were broken as they are conducting a civil investigation to determine whether the Trump Organization lied about the values of assets.

Meanwhile, people took to Twitter to express their opinion about Eric's deposition, with the majority of them slamming him for allegedly "lying" about chairty funds to benefit family businesses. One tweeted, "Eric Trump is a shi**y human, and this brief story tells of his recent adventures. He lied repetitively, then he cried over fake news, then he went home to play golf, check twitter, and sob alone on the toilet." Reacting to the news another wrote, "Delighted that Eric Trump won't be able to avoid a deposition into whether the Trump Organization inflated the value of its assets until after the election." And one noted, "Eric Trump will lie. Under oath. It's just in the genes."
