Netflix unveils first look at new Duffer Brothers' series ‘The Boroughs’ and we finally have a release date
Buzz around 'Stranger Things' Season 5 finale has finally simmered, but The Duffer Brothers have already given fans reason to stay hyped. Earlier on Wednesday, Netflix dropped major updates on 'The Boroughs', the Duffer Brothers' supernatural mystery series, created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. The streamer also released first-look images from the show featuring the marquee cast.
The show follows a grieving newcomer's encounter with a monster, which leads him to join a misfit bunch of heroes who uncover a dark secret about the evil haunting the community. Official logline of the show reads, "In a seemingly perfect retirement community, a grieving newcomer’s monstrous encounter inspires him to join a misfit crew of unlikely heroes who uncover a dark secret that proves their 'golden years' are more dangerous, and they are more formidable, than anyone expects."
Deadline's latest on the show included the images. The major cast includes Alfred Molina as Sam, Geena Davis as Renee, Alfre Woodard as Judy, Denis O’Hare as Wally, Clarke Peters as Art, Bill Pullman as Jack, Carlos Miranda as Paz, Jena Malone as Claire, Seth Numrich as Blaine, and Alice Kremelberg as Anneliese. Rounding up the list are Ed Begley Jr. as Edward, Dee Wallace as Grace, Eric Edelstein as Hank, Rafael Casal as Neil, Mousa Hussein Kraish as Dr. McGinnis, Beth Bailey as Kayleigh, Karan Soni as Toby, and Jane Kaczmarek as Lilly.
Addiss and Matthews take on the three-pronged role of creators, showrunners, and executive producers. The Duffer Brothers serve as EPs alongside Hilary Leavitt and Ben Taylor, who direct the first two episodes. Episodes 3, 4, 7, and 8 are directed by Augustine Frizzell. Kyle Patrick Alvarez directs the fifth and sixth episodes.
The creators are best known for 'The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance'. Speaking to Tudum, they shed light on what to expect from their latest. "From the beginning, we knew we wanted 'The Boroughs' to feel equal parts scary, mysterious, exciting, and emotional," Addiss and Matthews said. "The challenge was to create a world that could hold all of these different tones at once. Which is why it was so fun to work with the Duffer Brothers — the masters of balancing heart and horror."
As for Matt and Ross Duffer, their next project also includes an animated spin-off, 'Stranger Things: Tales from '85'. The upcoming series is set in the winter of 1985 and unfolds between Seasons 2 and 3 of the flagship show. Essentially, tseries could be considered a prequel. The official synopsis reads, "The original characters are about to embark on an epic journey in which they must fight new monsters and unravel a paranormal mystery terrorizing their town." Eric Robles serves as the showrunner of the show set to premiere on April 23.
'Stranger Things' Season 5 ended on December 31 and is widely regarded as one of the best '80s horror shows of all time. Now, the new series comes with higher expectations, as does the prequel series. 'The Boroughs' releases May 21 on Netflix with all eight episodes dropping at the same time.
