As 'Outlander' nears its final season, Sam Heughan teases a bold departure: 'We shall see...'
With seven epic seasons, historical series Outlander's dreamy run is all set to come to an end with its final season, scheduled to premiere on Friday, March 6. While fans are already forming their own theories about how the show will end, a surprising revelation from a cast member about the series finale has left fans more intrigued.
Sam Heughan, who plays the character of Jamie Fraser in the show, revealed that even the cast doesn't fully know how the show will end, despite filming for season 8 wrapping in September 2024. In a People interview, he said the finale remains a mystery: "We don't really know how it ends. We kind of know, but we shall see in the edit ourselves."
Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts has said that 'Outlander' Season 8 will raise the stakes and aim to satisfy fans, continuing Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire Randall's (Caitríona Balfe) love story while showing how the Revolutionary War affects Fraser's Ridge, as per ScreenRant. The final season will follow the shocking season 7 twist, hinting that Jane and Fanny may be the children of Jamie and Claire's daughter, Faith Fraser, adding tension as the series nears its end.
While 'Outlander' is based on Diana Gabaldon's novels, the show will conclude independently, as the author has yet to finish the final book, meaning the TV ending will likely differ from the source material. Heughan said he hopes Outlander's devoted fans will enjoy the finale, acknowledging the challenge of ending the series before the final book is released.
He explained, "I hope (viewers) feel we have done justice to the characters and to the story and to the fans. You know, it's hard. How do you finish a show like that? Obviously, we didn't finish the books. We had to finish our show, so it is a departure from the books in some ways, but for us it was rewarding, and we wanted to finish it right."
Notably, Vanity Fair and 'Outlander' unveiled the first official promotional images for season 8 in a joint Instagram post on Monday, December 15, offering fans an early glimpse at the upcoming final chapter, as per Good Housekeeping. The images showcase John Bell as Young Ian Murray, Izzy Meikle-Small as Rachel Murray, David Berry as Lord John Gray, and Charles Vandervaart as William Ransom, teasing how their characters will appear when the new episodes debut in 2026 and building anticipation for the series' long-awaited conclusion.
