‘FBI’, CBS’s crime drama television series created by Dick Wolf and Craig Turk centers on the inner workings of the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The series features an ensemble cast including Missy Peregrym, Zeeko Zaki, Jeremy Sisto, Ebonée Noel, Sela Ward, and Alana de la Garza. On March 31, ‘FBI’ concluded its second season.

Where we left off

In the episode titled ‘Emotional Rescue’, the FBI team investigates the murder of a college student. The murder of a foreign graduate student leads the team to a drug deal gone bad. Meanwhile, Chicago PD Detective Hailey Upton (guest star Tracy Spiridakos) joins the FBI's New York Team as a part of their interagency training program and finds her methods clash with the Bureau's by-the-book environment.

It was a standard procedural episode that did little to further the central storyline of the series. But that should come as no surprise. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, filming of the intended final three episodes of season 2 was never finished. Thus, episode 19 perhaps may have been the season finale. In fact, CBS has not yet confirmed whether the remaining three episodes will be aired in season 3.

What we'd like to see

Crime procedurals have nothing specific to look forward to usually, with respect to regular episodes. What drives them is the central plot -- the personal anguishes of the main characters and what drives them to do what they do. And ‘FBI’ has something to offer in that regard. Maggie Bell (Missy Peregrym), OA (Zeeko Zaki), Jubal (Jeremy Sisto) and others have their own stories, and ‘FBI’ would do well to further examine their lives.

It’s not that individual episodes are not entertaining on their own -- they definitely are. But an increased focus on the interpersonal relationships between the main characters would increase the show’s appeal a hundred-fold. This is always what sets good procedurals apart from the run-of-the-mill ones.

When is it returning

In May, CBS renewed the series for a third season. It remains to be seen if the unaired episodes of season 2 are released separately or added to season 3. While no release date has been announced yet for season 3 of ‘FBI’, the show is most likely to release in January 2021.
