Propane industry pays Matt to shill for fossil fuels

If you watch HGTV or Netflix, you could come across a show produced by an influencer who promotes the natural gas sector. According to the New York Times, an industry organization is using federally sanctioned funds meant for consumer education to pay for influencers and celebrities to promote natural gas and smear home electrification.

According to documents obtained by the New York Times and the Energy and Policy Institute, the Propane Education and Research Council (PERC) is paying influencers such as HGTV star Matt and Netflix science communicator Emily Calandrelli to spread their pro-natural gas, anti-electrification messaging.

Searching Matt's name with "propane" yields a plethora of intriguing results. Matt, a hot contractor who has hosted several HGTV series, makes feel-good local news pieces touting the merits of propane on a regular basis. In a particularly ironic twist, he aired one such piece last year on Earth Day, discussing how propane is an excellent choice for the environmentally minded.

"[On] Earth Day, we're thinking about being stewards for the planet," he remarked. "It’s time right now to use a very diverse, low-carbon energy mix to power homes and businesses. …We talk about electrifying everything, but that’s really not the answer at this point." Matt went on to say that propane is a "clean burner, it cleans up the environment."

'Build It Forward' Season 2 will premiere on Saturday, June 10, at 6 pm ET exclusively on HGTV.
