Marty Lagina's career before Oak Island

Marty Lagina was born in Kingsford, Michigan, and attended Michigan Tech to study Science and Mechanical Engineering. After graduating in 1977, he went on to work for the Amoco Production Company, a large oil company.

In 1982, while working as an engineer for Amoco, he earned a law degree from the University of Michigan. He then founded his own company, Terra Energy Ltd., which became a pioneer in natural gas extraction.

Under his leadership, Terra Energy grew to become one of Michigan's largest shale gas operators.

In 1995, Marty sold Terra Energy to CMS Energy for approximately $60 million. He used the profits to become the sole shareholder of Chartwell Properties L.L.C. and to establish Heritage Sustainable, a renewable energy company, in 2004.

Heritage Sustainable has become one of the major renewable energy suppliers in Michigan, as well as one of the largest wind turbine companies in the Midwest.

In the early 2000s, Marty also founded another company in Michigan, this time focusing on wine production.

Row 7, a 3-acre winery, has since expanded to become Villa Mari Vineyards, with approximately 60 acres of vineyards.

Why did the Lagina Brothers from 'The Curse of Oak Island' visit Oak Island?

When Rick was 11 years old, he used to visit the library once a week. During one of these visits, he discovered and read the January 1965 issue of Reader's Digest.

In this issue, he stumbled upon an article about Oak Island that described the legend of the treasure said to be buried there, along with information about the renowned Money Pit.

This discovery left Rick fascinated and sparked an enduring obsession with unraveling the island's secret.

Marty also found himself intrigued by Oak Island, although he approached the mystery with a more skeptical mindset. Nevertheless, Marty wanted to support his elder brother in pursuing his lifelong ambition, so he invested the majority of the funds required to acquire a share in Oak Island Tours, Inc.

What is the amount that the Lagina Brothers have invested in Oak Island?

The exact amount that Rick and Marty paid for a 50% stake in Oak Island Tours Inc. has not been publicly disclosed. However, estimates of their annual expenditures on drilling and excavation activities have been made available.

The brothers received their treasure-trove license in July 2010, allowing them to begin their quest at the end of that year. Because the Nova Scotia winters made excavating nearly impossible, the brothers have spent the last eight summers looking for Oak Island.

They're recognized for employing cutting-edge technology and bringing in worldwide specialists to help them in their pursuit, neither of which is inexpensive. The amount they've spent has also definitely escalated over time, with The Curse of Oak Island depicting greater and better technology arriving at the island every year.
