Andor Director Warns His Star Wars Story Is Getting Real, Urges People To Fight Back
Tony Gilroy says he never expected his 'Star Wars' story on 'Andor' and the rebellion to become this relevant to modern US politics, even as he urged "brilliant minds" to keep fighting back against unchecked authority.
Speaking at the 86th Peabody Awards, the director of the acclaimed Star Wars spoke about the show's political themes and admitted he never imagined the material would become so "freaky relevant," describing 'Andor' as the product of years spent contemplating "a fascist takeover of a galaxy far, far away." He also praised journalists, documentarians, and truth-tellers for continuing to push back against authoritarianism.
'Andor', which premiered in 2022 as a prequel to 'Rogue One', has been widely praised by critics for its mature storytelling, political depth, and grounded portrayal of rebellion within the Star Wars universe. The Peabody Awards also had the likes of Ben Affleck and Jimmy Kimmel draw parallels to US politics and Donald Trump.
