'Undone' Season 1 preview: Amazon's adult animated series from 'BoJack Horseman' creators is a mind-bending sci-fi mystery

Amazon Prime Video's adult animated series follows Rosa Salazar's Alma after a near-fatal accident leaves her with a unique understanding of time and space
UPDATED SEP 4, 2019

At first, it is a tad difficult to fully grasp what is happening in Amazon Prime Video's first adult animated series 'Undone', but you will find yourself being held hostage by the fascinating visuals. So you watch it again - and you don't mind because you are chasing to understand what is going on. And therein lies the beauty of 'Undone'.  'Undone' explores the elastic nature of reality through its central character, Rosa Salazar's Alma. After she gets into a near-fatal car accident that leaves her in a coma, Alma wakes up dazed with lapses in her memory of what had happened before the accident.

Created by 'BoJack Horseman' creators Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kute Purdy, 'Undone' uses the rotoscope animation technique, which involves tracing over motion picture footage frame by frame to produce a realistic world. Alma's accident awakens a latent ability in her and she discovers that she has a new relationship with time and space. She must now use her newfound abilities to find the truth behind her physicist father Jacob's (Bob Odenkirk) death in a car crash. As it turns out, Jacob didn't die as a result of an accident but was killed, along with his student and research assistant, for his research.

With each episode roughly 20 minutes-long, 'Undone's genre-bending narrative takes its audience on a fascinating journey. As Alma struggles to find her ground and navigate the spectrum with her father's help, she must do so without completely losing her mind - for living like this is not for regular folks, and as her father tells her, regular folks will deem her mentally unfit, like they did his mother.

As Prime Video's first adult animated series, 'Undone' is a unique exploration into animation and storytelling, a fitting answer to Netflix's range of adult animated shows. If you are keen on watching a sci-fi thriller that blends mystery and drama marvellously, put on 'Undone'. It is a show that you simply can't walk away from. Furthermore, if you are a 'BoJack Horseman' fan, this show mustn't be missed.

'Undone' releases on Amazon Prime Video on September 13, 2019.
