An Omaha man has been arrested for allegedly killing a two-year-old boy by sitting on him. 31-year-old Larry Murphy has been charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment causing death in connection with the death of Oakland Oburu.
According to a press release by the Council Bluffs Police Department, deputies were called to Casey's General Store at 510, 23rd Avenue, to assist medics with an unresponsive infant at the location on Friday, March 15.
When officers arrived at the scene, they questioned Murphy and his sister, which is when the former stated that he and the victim's mother had been staying at the American Inn at 2717 S. 24th St. in Council Bluffs when he found the two-year-old unresponsive.
A criminal complaint filed by the police stated that Murphy had been dating the victim's mother and that he had been living at the Inn with the mother, the victim, and the victim's uncle for the past six weeks.
Murphy told the officers that, when he found Oburu unresponsive, he called his sister for help and that she came from Bellevue NE. to assist him in taking the victim to the hospital. But when they reached the department store, they decided to call 911. The infant was treated at the scene and later transported to the Jennie Edmundson Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Des Moines Register reported that, during a subsequent investigation, detectives are said to have received information from the mother that Murphy was the primary disciplinarian because of her cerebral palsy.
The mother revealed that, on the day of Oburu's death, the infant had taken Murphy's cell phone. In an attempt to punish the two-year-old, Two-year-old bleeds from his eyes, dies after mother's boyfriend sat on him as punishment for taking his phone.
"She said her son initially was moaning during this and then became quiet," the criminal complaint reads. "She assumed (Oburu) was going to go back to sleep as Larry covered him up with the bed comforter and left the room to pay their motel rent." She said she heard her son wheezing but couldn't check on him because of her physical condition.
When Murphy returned to the room about 20 minutes later, he found Oburu not breathing and unresponsive. It was here that he called his sister for help, and despite the efforts of medical professionals, the victim could not be saved.
Describing Oburu's condition, the complaint states, "During the examination at the hospital, it appeared that (the victim) had no obvious trauma to him or any large wounds. (The doctor) did notice that O.O. had subconjunctival hemorrhage in both eyes which is a possible sign from being asphyxiated."
Detectives concluded that the 31-year-old was responsible for the death, and arrested and charged him with the murder of the infant. Murphy has been booked into the Pottawattamie County Corrections Facility, where he is currently awaiting his court date.
