President Donald Trump has escalated his war on Dr Anthony Fauci by retweeting a series of bizarre claims from his supporters, including one that says the 79-year-old physician supports ID cards “to go shopping” - an accusation made by Dr Mark Young, a conservative podcast host. The president retweets came as he disagreed with Fauci and other medical experts on multiple occasions regarding the approach to the Covid-19 pandemic. The experts have cautioned against the growing number of coronavirus cases in the country, but Trump has pushed the country towards normalcy while ignoring the deadly virus. Not just this, the US leader’s stance has put him against many fellow Republicans, who have also requested him to wear masks in public amid rising positive cases.

On Monday, July 13, Trump retweeted a post by Young that read: “So based on Dr. Fauci and the Democrats, I will need an ID card to go shopping but not to vote?” However, it’s not clear from where his claim originated. Young and Chuck Woolery host a podcast together. Woolery, a long time supporter of Trump, also got the attention of the president on Monday as the 74-year-old retweeted his post.

“The most outrageous lies are the ones about Covid 19. Everyone is lying. The CDC, Media, Democrats, our Doctors, not all but most, that we are told to trust. I think it's all about the election and keeping the economy from coming back, which is about the election. I'm sick of it,” Woolery tweet said.

Woolery is the host of several game shows, including a stint as the original host of ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and the original incarnation of ‘Love Connection’. The 79-year-old has also claimed that his open support for Trump has ruined his career. “I have pretty much destroyed my career by openly supporting Trump and letting all know, I am a conservative. Painful at times, but true. After all, is said and done. It was my choice and I can live with it. I would do it all again,” he tweeted in November 2019.

Trump has also shown his support for Woolery’s demand for re-opening of schools in fall. He tweeted, “There is so much evidence, yes scientific evidence, that schools should open this fall. It's worldwide and it's overwhelming. BUT NO.” The Republican leader has said earlier that Democrats were playing politics in the name of the pandemic. Last week, he pushed to re-open schools in the fall and alleged that Democrats did not want to get children back to school. “We have to open our schools. Open our schools. Stop this nonsense. We open our schools,” Trump said during an event with Hispanic leaders in the Rose Garden of the White House.

“We have to get our schools open and stop this political nonsense and it's only political nonsense. It's politics. They don't want to open because they think it will help them on November 3. I think it's going to hurt them on November 3. Open your schools,” the president added.

The latest hit at Fauci by Trump comes after the White House publicly tried to discredit the infectious disease expert, and called him out for being incorrect with his response to the novel coronavirus. In a statement to CNN on Saturday, July 11, the White House said: “Several White House officials are concerned about the number of times Dr. Fauci has been wrong on things.”
