Tobias Menzies is all set to play the role of Prince Philip in The Crown
Menzies is best known for his role as Edmure Tully in HBO's hit series, Game of Thrones.
'Game of Thrones' and 'Outlander' star, Tobias Menzies is all set to play the role of Prince Philip in season 3 and season 4 of The Crown. The actor is going to be taking over from Matt Smith who played Prince Philip in season 1 and season 2 of the hit Netflix series.
Tobias Menzies is best known for his role as Edmure Tully on HBO's hit series, Game of Thrones as well as his role as Frank Randall and Black Jack Randall on the show the 'Outlander'. Menzies will pick up where Matt left off and will take the role forward as season 3 and season 4 progresses.
Menzies was cast about two months after Paul Bettany, who was in consideration for the role, decided to bow out due to the time commitment needed to complete the shooting. As reported by Vanity Fair, the show's casting director, Nina Gold shared why it was especially challenging to cast season 3 as the show jumps ahead 10 years.
"Not only are we casting real-life characters. but as we get closer to the present day, many of these people are very much alive. So we have to honor them by picking the right actor to play them—while making a link between the actors who played these characters in the first seasons."
Menzies also revealed that he was not very sure if he was returning to the 'Game of Thrones' franchise and reportedly told Digital Spy that his character Edmure Tully, "obviously somewhere in a prison, he’s still around alive somewhere . . . I feel like they have so many stories to tie-up, whether that’s a story they’ll want to go back to, I don’t know."
One of Menzies 'Outlander' co-stars, Caitriona Balfe expressed her happiness for Tobias and tweeted the initial report with the message, "Congratulations darling. So excited for you and so excited to see this!!!"
