Season 1 recap:
In the first season, we saw how Geralt of Rivia and Princess Cirilla's fate became intertwined the night Queen Calanthe and her daughter Pavetta have a confrontation about who Pavetta will marry. According to the Law of Surprise, which states that when someone's life is saved by an individual, as a show of gratitude, the individual should offer the savior a boon, or "favor, whose nature is, at that time, unknown to one or both parties." So when Pavetta's father was saved by the Urcheon of Erlenwald, a knight, he promised him this favor. The surprise turned out to be Queen Calanthe's daughter, who Urcheon later fell in love with. So when Geralt, the witcher saved Urcheon, he was also promised the same favor. And unexpectedly, Pavetta turned out to be pregnant with Princess Cirilla. The entire season is a run-up to how Geralt and Cirilla meet amid a raging war between Nilfgaard and Cintra.
Season 2:
The second season is expected to pick up right after how Yennefer and the other mages tried to keep the Sodden Hill on their side to stop Nilfgaardians from invading the rest of Northern Kingdoms after they conquered Cintra. With Fringilla's help, the Nilfgaardians overpower Yennefer and the other mages who put up a fight and in the process, many mages are killed.
About the upcoming season, showrunner Lauren Hissrich told PC Gamer, "What’s great about season two, I can tell you, is that, in what we’ve written, the story becomes much more focused. There’s a stronger drive in the story because all of the relationships that we’ve been setting up in season one actually start to come into fruition in season two."
She added, "Characters start meeting and interacting more. That goes well sometimes. It doesn’t go well sometimes. But it’s kind of like, all of those building blocks that we set up for the world finally start to come together into something a little more concrete."
Release date:
'The Witcher' season 2 was renewed on November 13 and the same was confirmed by creator Hissrich. However, the release date of the upcoming season is not something that we are privy to at this time. Maybe we can call on Yennefer and her magic to guide us? Until then, do watch this space for all the latest updates.
