'The Umbrella Academy' season 2's plot, cast, news and everything you need to know about Netflix's hit superhero show

Good news for fans of 'The Umbrella Academy', Netflix's hit superhero show is back for the second season. The giant streaming network announced yesterday that the live-action series based on the Dark Horse comics by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá will feature 10 episodes in the second round and the cast set will reprise their roles.

With 'The Umbrella Academy', the streaming giant had a lot to prove, mainly that they did not need Marvel or DC to produce a hit superhero flick. Now that the show garnered quite a fanbase after one season run, it was a no-brainer about season 2's arrival. In fact, it was believed that this particular Netflix original was the most popular digital series in the US shortly after its debut on February 15. Though the announcement of season 2 came in pretty late, it has been worth the wait. Here is everything we know about the show:

The date of release for season 2 hasn't been announced yet but the filming and production will commence this summer. In an interview with IndieWire, showrunner Steve Blackman revealed that one season takes almost 18 months, so season 2 isn't coming anytime soon, not until 2020 or 2021.

Plot

'The Umbrella Academy' revolves around the story of seven adopted siblings born under mysterious circumstances and all possessing powerful abilities. All the estranged siblings find themselves reunited following the death of their adoptive father Sir Reginald Hargreeves and later they get together to save the world.

The official release reads; "On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by a billionaire who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his "children" to save the world. Now, the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father's passing and must work together to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse."

The Hargreeves siblings will be back and almost all the main casts will reprise their roles. Ellen Page (Vanya), Tom Hopper (Luther), David Castañeda (Diego), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison), Robert Sheehan (Klaus), Aidan Gallagher (Number Five) and Justin H. Min (Ben) are will mark their return.

Ritu Arya ('Humans', 'Sherlock'), Yusuf Gatewood ('Law & Order: Criminal Intent', 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation') and Marin Ireland ('Homeland', 'Masters of Sex') are all set to join the returning cast members of the show. However, the plot twist of the siblings traveling back in time could feature the characters who died in season 1, including Detective Patch (Ashley Madekwe) and Pogo (Adam Gole). It is highly likely that there will be many more scenes with the young Hargreeves cast too.

Season 1 recap

Season 1 ended with Number 5's attempt to stop the apocalypse after traveling through time and discovering exactly when the world would end. Number 5 fails to save the world mainly because of the sister, Vanya, who everyone thought was powerless. Their adopted father suppressed her abilities as a child and in the final fight, Allison thinks she’s able to stop Vanya/White Violin and save the world without killing her sister. However, Vanya's energy hits the moon, breaking it into pieces, and as the shards of the moon come hurling to earth, Number 5 decides to travel through time taking his siblings with him. The season ends with them disappearing just before everything is destroyed.
