Spoilers for 'The Third Day' Season 1 Episode 2 'Saturday - The Son'

Jude Law's Sam is haunted by the memories and regrets of his past. He flees away to the quiet, apparently unsuspecting environment of the Osea Island in order to escape from his nightmares. But it looks like he has found himself to be a part of what he intended to flee. Following their late-night adventures from the previous episode, Sam and Jess (Katherine Waterston) spend the night together. While they argue over this for a while (mostly Jess), they soon seem to have patched up. This leads to a heart-to-heart between the two as Sam opens up about his dead son.

After he decides to stay back at the Island for the so-called music festival, he spends a very stressful day running away from locals in dreadful, scary masks who are apparently trying to hunt him down. Things take a weird turn in the night when during the festival, Sam and Jess pop acid, following which we cannot rely on Sam for his account of the story. It is indeed hard to tell what's happening in 'The Third Day'. Since every episode ends with a dreamlike vision, it brings up more questions than anything else leaving one even more confused than at the start.

He is then led away by Mrs Martin (Emily Watson) who warns him that Larry (John Dagleish) and his friends want him dead. It's implied that this is because Larry thinks there might be something fishy going on between Sam and his teenage daughter Epona (Jessie Ross). So she drags him away and then leaves him in the middle of a field. Following this, he begins hallucinating and envisions himself cut open at the stomach. Seconds later, Larry shows up and hits him on the head with a crowbar and covers it up with a cloth. While blood does ooze out, who is to say that Sam really is injured?

So the big question right now is -- is Sam dead?

Frankly, we can't tell. For one, it might as well all be a part of his imagination and /or hallucination after the acid trip he takes with Jess. At the same time, it must be noted that Sam is hardly the most reliable -- he's overwhelmed by grief and loss. So it remains largely inconclusive. The six episodes of the miniseries are divided into two chapters -- the first when Law shows up and the second with Naomie Harris' appearance. For Law's chapter to be completed, we only have one episode left. Does he survive tonight's episode?

'The Third Day' airs on Mondays from 9-10 pm ET on HBO. The episodes will be available to stream on HBO Max following the airing on the network.
