Spoilers for ‘The Stand’ Episode 5, ‘Fear and Loathing in New Vegas’

As ‘The Stand’ reaches it’s mid-mark, things are getting high-stakes. In episode 4 of the CBS All Access limited series based on Stephen King’s book of the same name, we saw Nadine (Amber Heard) seduce Harold (Owen Teague) and then tell him that she knows that he desperately wants to kill Stu (James Marsden). She reveals that her mysterious benefactor -- Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgård) -- wants to enlist Harold's help in taking out Mother Abagail (Whoopi Goldberg) and the council.

But things went south as the episode went forward. After Nadine agrees to sexually gratify him (in all manners except intercourse -- she was after all to remain pure for Flagg), the two sneak into the town's ski patrol supply area to steal explosives used to trigger seasonal avalanches. However, things go wrong when they are discovered by Harold's friend on city watch, Teddy (Eion Bailey) -- Nadine shoots and kills him.

Things will get trickier in the episode to come

In the previous episode, Glen (Greg Kinnear) suggested a strategy to combat what’s coming from Vegas -- they could send two to three spies to see what’s going on there. Stu wanted to go but he was too valuable to be risked. Ultimately it was decided that Dayna (Natalie Martinez), Judge Farris (Gabrielle Rose), and Tom Cullen (Brad William Henke) would spy on Flagg's rival community at Vegas and report back after the next lunar cycle. The new episode, 'Fear and Loathing in New Vegas', will obviously see that story move ahead.

What will they find in Vegas? A deadly virus called "Captain Trips", engineered as an advanced biological weapon by the government was accidentally released across America and the world, causing 99.4 percent of the entire world's population to die. But as per the books Flagg’s group, after the havoc wreaked by the pandemic, is able to quickly reorganize their society.

They were able to rebuild the city of Las Vegas as many technical professionals had migrated to the city. Flagg's group also started a schooling system and weapons program in the books. Will the three spies manage to note all the development and report back to Mother Abagail in time? The chances feel slim given Flagg’s supernatural powers of controlling minds.

Episode 5’s initial title was ‘Suspicious Minds’, and it likely suggests that Mother Abagail will begin suspecting Nadine. After all, she too has supernatural powers, and it is likely that she would feel Flagg’s presence in her.
