'The Last of Us' on HBO: Official runtime for the premiere episode to be bigger than 'House of the Dragon'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 2023 is just around the corner and there’s a lot of excitement regarding all the new content that we are going to see in the New Year. Fans wouldn’t have to wait for far too long to see one of the biggest shows on their screens as HBO is bringing the TV adaptation of ‘The Last of Us’ in the first couple of weeks of January 2023. The TV series, which is based on the video game series of the same name, has been one of the highly-anticipated TV shows for a while now and the network has already promised that it will be unlike anything viewers have ever seen before.
As soon the first trailer for the HBO and HBO Max series surfaced online, fans got really excited to know that the first season of ‘The Last of Us’ will be big in terms of runtime as well. Now that the premiere date for the series comes closer, HBO has finally unveiled the official runtime for the first episode of the upcoming series and we can tell you that the premiere will surely be a massive one.

According to HBO’s official website, the first episode will be 85 minutes long (1 hour and 25 minutes), making it the biggest premiere in terms of runtime while comparing it to the recent HBO shows. The episode seems to be filled with a lot of violence and adult content because the warning label for the episode says, “adult language, adult content, and violence.”
When it comes to the official runtimes of other recent HBO show premieres, ‘The Last of Us’ is much ahead of the likes of ‘House of the Dragon’ (66 minutes), ‘The Nevers’ (65 minutes), ‘Game of Thrones’ (61 minutes), ‘True Detective’ (57 minutes), ‘Euphoria’ (53 minutes), and ‘The White Lotus’ (51 minutes).
Meanwhile, when compared to other streaming platform shows, the premiere is even bigger than the first episode of ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4. The premiere of Season 4 was 78 minutes long (1 hour and 18 minutes) while the eighth episode had an official runtime of 85 minutes.
As far as the first season of ‘The Last of Us’ is concerned, it will cover Part One of the blockbuster hit game and will consist of nine episodes. The official synopsis reads, “The official synopsis reads: "Set 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed and centers on the relationship between Joel, a smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be key to a cure for a deadly pandemic. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle the 14-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as they traverse the US and depend on each other for survival.”
The show sees Pedro Pascal playing the role of Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Other actors to feature in the series include Gabriel Luna (Tommy), Anna Torv (Tess), Merle Dandridge (Marlene), Nick Offerman (Bill), Melanie Lynskey (Kathleen), Troy Baker (James), and more in pivotal roles.
‘The Last of Us’ is scheduled to premiere on January 15 at 9 pm EST on HBO.
