In its first episode, 'The King: Eternal Monarch' sees the rise of King Lee Gon (Lee Min-ho) in the Kingdom of Corea from 1994 as young boy after his father's death to the present -- in 2019 -- where he has become a capable ruler.

The one responsibility that he refuses to shoulder though is that of giving his kingdom an heir, and so his chief caretaker tries her best to use even talisman to bring about love in his life. However, King Lee Gon refuses and the only person who seems to be close to him is his childhood friend and chief security personnel, Jo Yeong (Woo Do-hwan).

Lee Gon is so close Jo Yeong that one would even mistake it for romance, and the brewing bromance in the first episode has got fans gushing about two of their favorite actors. One of them wrote on Twitter,  "I'm here for the bromance," and shared multiple screenshots from the show of the two actors. Another shared, "Protect Lee Gon and Jo Yeong please."

One of the fans also wished that not only Lee Gon, but Jo Yeong too would crossover to the alternate universe. This fan wrote, "Lowkey wishing #WooDoHwan would follow #LeeMinho & crossover as well to the other world as i need more of them together." Another fan shared a string of photos of one of the scenes that sees Lee Gon lean into Jo Yeon and wrote, "It's official...! They r my endgame (sic)." Sharing the sentiment was another fan who shared, "Tae Eul (Kim Go-eun) better show up soon or else I will end up shipping these two."

Fans are also excited to see Lee Min-ho back on television screens after three years. The actor had taken a break after he was enlisted in the army and 'The King: Eternal Monarch' is the first show in which fans get to see his charming self again. One of the fans professed their love on Twitter and said, "We all can't believe that he's finally back!! Guyssss i can't believe that we'll continue seeing this handsome man in a drama again. My goshhhh. He's sooooooo perf (sic)."

The first episode in itself has also impressed viewers who cannot wait to see what happens next now that Lee Gon has entered another universe with his loving horse Maximus.

'The King: Eternal Monarch' is originally aired in South Korea on SBS at 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. The show can be streamed on Netflix in the US.
