A leader never handholds but shows the direction for the followers to follow. Add the right kind of guidance and you have the perfect mentor you can ask for. Dr Marcus Andrews is perhaps the last person at San Jose St Bonaventure Hospital, people would go for guidance. On the outside, he comes across as an arrogant, egoist, and a tad stubborn doctor who likes his point to be the last one on the table. And he has proven how difficult he could be on multiple occasions.

From not being friendly to Shaun, to doubting Dr Glassman’s trust in the residents, fighting over treatment alternatives with Dr Audrey and much more, Marcus’s repertoire of being curt and rough is quite a long one. But such people often surprise us with an out-of-elements act, and when they do, it changes our perception of them completely.

In episode 8 of season 3, we saw a new side to Marcus, which, we are sure, had existed, but never came to light. He assigns a complicated brain surgery to third-year resident Dr Morgan Reznick, as her first lead surgery. As she practices for her big day, she realizes that it is more difficult than she had expected. As cynical as she is as a person, Morgan feels that her senior is trying to find a way to pull her down and make her fail.

She decides to take it up to her senior, Marcus, who turns her thoughts around and instills more confidence in her than she had expected. The conversation that ensues between them proves that the senior surgeon understands his juniors well, is aware of their capabilities, and most importantly, is able to estimate their success. While Morgan was suffering from self-doubt, and feeling unsure, Marcus saw her aggression, her attitude towards work, and identified the leader in her, which Morgan herself never noticed.

Sometimes, the most difficult teachers give us the best lessons of our lives. It is not with spoon-feeding but with challenges that real mentors make their mentees grow and become successful. And Dr Marcus Andrews proved just that. In a hard shell, we saw a man who reflects the true characters of a leader and a mentor that St Bonaventure Hospital could be proud of.
