'The Farewell': Release date, plot, cast, trailer, news and everything to know about the upcoming Awkwafina starrer
'The Farewell' is an American film which was screened as a part of the US Dramatic Competition section at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. Following this, the film also received some rave reviews for the portrayal of the life of an immigrant who straddles two culture and lives in a state of conflict. The film is based on writer-director Lulu Wang's life experiences, which she spoke of in a podcast called 'What You Don't Know' as a part of the radio show 'This American Life' in 2017.

The film is slated to release on July 12 in the US.
Plot:
Billi, a Chinese-American woman decides to go back to China after learning that her grandmother is suffering from cancer and has very little time left on earth. She does this despite opposition from her parents and while she travels to the place where her parents called home, she comes to terms with the cultural conflict that has always been a part of her life and she also faces the truth about her family which lies to the family matriarch about the disease that she is suffering from. The movie is a heartwarming tale about how she comes to terms with the differences.

Actor Awkwafina plays the lead role of Billi in the film. She goes against her parents and fights the decision that her parents and other elders have taken - to hide the truth about cancer from the grandmother who is suffering from the disease.
Tzi Ma
Actor Tzi Ma plays the role of Haiyan, Billi's father in the film.
Diana Lin
Actor Diana Lin plays the role of Jian, Billi's mother in the film.
Zhao Shuzhen
Actor Zhao Shuzhen plays the role of Nai Nai, Billi's grandmother who suffers from cancer in the film.

Lulu Wang, the writer-director of 'The Farewell' well-known for her film Posthumous which released in 2014. It starred Brit Marling as McKenzie Grain and Jack Huston as Liam Price.

The trailer of 'The Farewell' released on May 7 and has since received a good response. Featuring Awkwafina as Billi, the video teases what the lead of the film goes through after she decides to visit China to meet her grandmother who is suffering from cancer. She learns that the elders of the family have decided not to let the matriarch know about the disease that she is suffering from and try to keep her happy.
