'The Expanse': Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about Amazon Prime Video's sci-fi drama
'The Expanse' had its ratings grow exponentially. Season 1 opened at a healthy 77% on Rotten Tomatoes and eventually climbed up to 95% ratings the following season. The next two installments fared even better with 100%. The audience ratings were just as impressive.
The Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby-developed space drama based on James SA Corey's sci-fi book series of the same name is set to return with the fifth season. Set in the future in which Earth, Mars, and people of the Asteroid belt clash in a conflict. The four seasons have unraveled conspiracies that determine the fate of mankind. The Syfy series moved to Amazon Prime in 2019 and the fifth installment will be landing in December. Here's a quick primer ahead of its release.
Release date
'The Expanse' drops on December 16, 2020, on Amazon Prime Video. The first three episodes of the show will release on December 16 with subsequent episodes that will air on Wednesdays until February 3, 2021.
Plot
The premise of Season 4 was rather simple but detailed quite elaborately. In short, it's a war between the Belters and the New Terra or the RCE, over the ownership of the new barren but home planet Ilus. The new season will see multiple storylines running and will focus on the humans seeking new Earth-like planets to call home. The new chapter will also thrust Rocinante's crew in the spotlight. Amidst all this, there can also be some personal character arcs.
The official synopsis reads: "Season five of the series picks up as multitudes of humans leave the solar system in search of new homes and vast fortunes on the earth-like worlds beyond the alien Ring, and a heavy price for centuries of exploitation of the Belt finally comes due and a reckoning is at hand."
"For the crew of the Rocinante and the leaders of the Inner Planets and the Belt, the past and present converge, bringing forth personal challenges that have wide-reaching repercussions throughout the Solar System. Amos (Wes Chatham) returns to Earth to confront his past and the legacy of the life he fought to leave behind."
"Naomi (Dominique Tipper) reaches out to her estranged son in a desperate bid to save him from his father’s toxic influence. Bobbie (Frankie Adams) and Alex (Cas Anvar) confront the collapse of Mars as they chase a shadowy cabal with ties to terrorists and criminals. Holden (Steven Strait) wrestles with the consequences of his own past with the Protomolecule, the aliens who built it, and the mystery of what killed them. Drummer (Cara Gee), with a new crew, fights to escape who and what she used to be. And Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo), refusing to be relegated to the sidelines, fights to prevent a terrorist attack unrivaled in history."
