Netflix has been betting big on reality shows. Even though the streaming giant keeps the number of series to a bare minimum, they package and sell it in a way that almost always works. 'The Circle', for instance, was an instant hit among binge-watchers who couldn't stop rooting for eight strangers, of which some were even catfishes, quarantining in their apartments and chatting via a computer application. After the successful maiden run, Netflix is now hopeful that the sophomore season will live up to the hype.

Release date

'The Circle' Season 2 will premiere on Wednesday, April 14. As per the norm, the first four episodes will be out on the mentioned date, after which Netflix will roll out new episodes in batches of four. The first one arrives on April 21, and the second one will drop on April 28. The finale is scheduled to air on May 5.

Plot

Let's just say the format of the show was ahead of its time. It was conceived and executed in pre-pandemic times when sequestering oneself had a different meaning than what it does today. It was all about a group of strangers having fun making new friends and stirring up conversations via a speech-to-text social media platform while figuring out ways to take home the impressive $100,000 cash prize. Interestingly, in this show, there's something for everyone. Those eliminated have the option of either leaving the building completely or picking a name they'd like to meet face-to-face. In Season 1, Miranda Bissonnette made out with winner Joey Sasso after she was voted out.

Cast

Netflix is yet to announce the cast but we know for now that Comedian Michelle Buteau will be back to entertain the viewers. Talking to NBC last year, Michelle said that she loved the "social experiment of it all" while explaining why people catfish. "At the end of ‘The Circle,’ you’ll see that a lot of people who catfish are insecure. They are suffering with their self-esteem because we do judge quite harshly based on profile pictures and definitely judge books by their covers," the host expressed.

Showrunners

Executive producer Tim Harcourt, in a chat with Variety revealed what he enjoys most about the format of the show is how comedic it can get. “What I really love about the format is the comedy it can give you — and the comedy comes from people saying one thing publicly and another privately. I’m a really big fan of stuff that is comedic first and dramatic second,” he added.
