'The Chi' Season 5: Meet the new characters of the Showtime series

With the new season of ‘The Chi’ on Showtime, we also meet the fresh additions who are joining the show

Showtime’s highly anticipated show ‘The Chi’ season 5 has globally premiered on June 26, 2022. This well-written show has been a fan favorite ever since its inception back in 2018. ‘The Chi’ has slowly and gradually created its own fanbase across the globe. ‘The Chi’ has been focusing more on the Black people and the challenges that they face daily whilst living in the southern part of Chicago.

According to Showtime, ‘The Chi’ is ‘a timely coming-of-age story centering on a group of residents on the South Side of Chicago who becomes linked by coincidence but bonded by the need for connection and redemption. The show has been created by the Emmy award-winning director Lena Waithe. More particularly, we would be seeing how season five goes much deeper into the joys and complications of Black love which includes their relationships, children, career, community, and self as well.

Besides, exciting news for fans is that Showtime has finally raised the curtains and revealed its new characters that would be joining in this season of ‘The Chi’.

Nia Jervier as Tierra

According to Showtime, the Netflix’s ‘Dear White People’ spinoff series star Nia Jervier, who is best known for her performance as Kelsey Phillips, is going to be seen essaying the role of Tierra who is, “the poised, polished and driven god-niece of Douda (Curtiss Cook), whom he recruits for a rebranding effort. Nia has also appeared in the BET series ‘Twenties’, another TV show created by The Chi mastermind Lena Waithe.



 

Carolyn Michelle Smith as Deja

The actress Carolyn Michelle Smith has been known for her performances in hit Netflix series like ‘House of Cards’ and ‘Russian Doll’. In the former, she played Willa, chief of staff for Claire Underwood (Robin Wright). And in the latter, she plays Agnes, grandmother of Alan (Charlie Barnett). She also has done several guest-starring roles in shows like ‘How to Get Away With Murder’, ‘Luke Cage’ and ‘Code Black’. Carolyn is going to be seen essaying the character of Deja who is Shaad (Jason Weaver) new love interest that helps him level up in more ways than one in the current season.



 

L’lerrét Jazelle as journalist Fatima

A rising star, the actress L’lerrét Jazelle would be seen portraying the role of Fatima in ‘The Chi’ season 5. Showtime explains that her character is “a local journalist who wants the best for her neighborhood and isn't afraid to hold politicians' feet to the fire to get the truth”. L’lerrét has appeared in guest-starring roles on shows like ‘4400’, ‘9-1-1’, and ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’. She took a role in the Showtime pilot ‘Coercion’ as well.



 

Alongside returning cast members Jacob Latimore, Alex Hibbert, Yolonda Ross, Shamon Brown Jr, Michael V. Epps, Birgundi Baker, Luke James, and Curtiss Cook, Season 5 will see Kandi Burruss, La La Anthony, Jason Weaver, and Iman Shumpert have also returned as guest stars in season five of the show.
