Spoiler alert for Season 4 Episode 6 — 'To Peg or Not to Peg'

Freeform's 'The Bold Type' is always taking risks with its content. The characters often challenge themselves against societal norms and emerge discovering new things about themselves at the same time, setting a precedent and advancing the conversations around socially relevant issues.

'To Peg or Not to Peg' offers an interesting take on preconceived gender roles in the bedroom via Kat Edison (Aisha Dee) as she comes to a realisation about her sexuality. Deciding to dabble in uncomplicated, no strings attached dating, Kat finds herself in bed with a bartender in the last episode. The wild night of passion leads to the barman (Tom Austen) making a unique request in bed — he would like Kat to use a strap on and peg him.

At first, the request is unusual for Kat, who has always thought of herself to be demure in bed. But is she?

Through the episode, Kat ponders over the idea about the latest sexual adventure as she is debating over the perfect strap-on for her personality. Later, when she is enlightening Alex Crawford (Matt Ward) about entering different territories than one is used to — "it's scary because it's different than what we were taught to expect" — she finally decides to do it.

Elsewhere, Jane Sloan (Katie Stevens) gets a vagina facial, which doesn't go right and she ends up with a horrible yeast infection. She is completely surprised that most women around her often suffer from infections. Why? Because we don't talk about it. So at a convention for women's wellness, Jane asks the women in the audience why seemingly "embarrassing" things "from down there" are kept tightly locked in a closet, but we can go out and get vagina facials. Taking on the societal expectations of women's wellness, standing her ground and countering the shame, Jane finds herself under Forbes' 30 Under 30 list.

Meghann Fahy and Caroline Lagerfelt (Freeform)

Sutton Brady (Meghann Fahy), this week, has a more of a domestic situation at her hands as she is meeting with Richard's mother. But her attempts to bond aren't all that successful as Sutton is appalled to infer that she is thought of as a saleswoman after she bags a sponsorship from a so-so beer brand for her wedding to Richard Hunter (Sam Page). So she walks out of one of her meetings with Richard's mother only to realise she should be apologising for her rude treatment. All is well between them by the end of the episode and they get ready to plan the wedding.

This week had a warm ending it to it at Scarlet. Although we were sad when Alex had found the perfect woman in Dr Alicia Golden (Yasha Jackson), but couldn't look beyond his inherent ideas of gender roles. Jacqueline Carlyle (Melora Hardin) seems to be getting back on her feet as her marriage with Ian Carlyle (Gildart Jackson) is falling apart. Hunting down Miles Shaw gets interesting for Jacqueline and we are expecting it to lead to new ventures for her.

'The Bold Type' airs on Thursday at 9/ 8c on Freeform.
