'The Batman' was slated to drop in 2021, but the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic meant there would be a significant delay. When it finally hit cinemas on March 4 in the US, the audience's initial reactions were all about how the Robert Pattinson-starrer had to be one of the best Batman movies made in recent times. For most DC ardents, this comes as great news after the release of 'Zack Snyder's Justice League' last year.

Directed by Matt Reeves, the reboot sees Batman and Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) take down the Riddler (Paul Dano) who plans to wreak havoc in Gotham City. He engages in a series of murders of the city's elite and links the victim's deaths to the masked vigilante. The film, primarily a detective movie first and then a superhero flick, shows Pattinson's bat in his second year of fighting crime.

'The Batman' Review: Robert Pattinson as vengeance is masterful, dark, and worth the wait

Harping praises were some of the fandoms who caught the early shows. "Just saw the Batman. Second best batman film ever imo - only behind the Dark Knight. You have to see this one in theaters. Incredible work. It’s dark, noir & silent. No color, no smile, no fun. It’s all crimes, corruption & mysteries. Gotham for you! Love this dark Batman too!" one of the tweets read. "I saw #TheBatman tonight and HOLY SHIT. It might be the best comic book movie I’ve ever seen. Robert Pattinson is the FUCKING BATMAN!!!" another opined.

"Nicely done, @mattreevesLA! This new Gotham is something I'm looking forward to seeing more of. The cowl has a touch of '66 on it and I dig it. Feels like I took a tour of 'The Batman' comics. Perfect balance of realism and comics," one of the fans wrote. One segment of the audience felt that the runtime was a little too long ('The Batman' runs close to three hours). "While #TheBatman is inspired— def in the running for BEST Rich White Dude vigilante movie EVER— we can still acknowledge that making it longer than Yom Kippur services was maybe not entirely necessary?" a tweet read.

"#TheBatman is (and I know this sounds hyperbolic) the best live action Batman movie to date. Every inch of this movie shows a serious understanding of what makes Batman, “The Batman”. @mattreevesLA had an vision and executed it to its full potential. PS #Rbats was incredible too," a comment read. "Matt Reeves created a fantastic movie that feels as if you are watching a graphic novel. Giacchino’s score to the film is amazing mixing the classic theme with a darker tone. At some points it does seem like the film can drag on but overall it’s a joyride," a fan remarked.
