Marshalls found and confiscated a number of whiskey bottles and cellphones from the four inmates.

Texas prison officials revealed how four inmates were caught after they escaped out of a maximum-security facility and returned with cellphones and whiskey.

Investigators began conducting surveillance behind the Federal Prison Complex in Beaumont, Texas, after receiving several reports of inmates leaving the facility, located 90 miles east of Houston, to bring back contraband, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Four men were seen leaving the prison grounds and cutting through a neighboring ranch at around 10:30 pm on Friday. The inmates, who didn't know officers were hiding in the brush, were caught and taken back into custody by the United States Marshals Service, the New York Post reports.

The escapees were later identified as Robert Young, 45, Leo Martinez, 25, Silvstre Rico, 35, and Julian Lemus, 34 after they were booked on charges of escape into the LaSalle Correctional Facility. Marshalls found and confiscated a number of whiskey bottles and cellphones from the four inmates.

In an announcement on social media, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office assured they would continue their efforts to work with the United States Marshals Service "to make Jefferson County a safer place to live."

"Last night, 10/11/2019, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Investigators and the U.S. Marshals conducted surveillance behind the Federal Prison Complex after repeated reports of prisoners continuing to escape and bring contraband back into the prison complex," the Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook. "Around 10:30 p.m., Investigators observed 4 males leave the prison grounds and cut through a neighboring ranch. The inmates ran when they saw the Law Enforcement Officers step out of the brush. All 4 inmates were quickly taken into custody."

"The confiscated contraband included bottles of Whiskey and cell phones," they added. "The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Marshals will continue our efforts to work together to make Jefferson County a safer place to live."

That said, prison authorities did not reveal why the men were in prison or any further information regarding their attempted escape.
